    Many in the Mexican Boxing Community felt that the 25 year-old former WBA Flyweight Champion
    and #1 WBC Flyweight, 5' 0" Guty Espadas was 'way too powerful' for WBC Champion Chan-Hee Park
    in December 1979.

    And that, Guty's left hook would demolish the '13-Bout Pro' WBC Champion Chan-Hee Park with ease,
    bringing the WBC Flyweight Title back to Mexico.

    Thus, setting up a great battle between Guty Espadas and the 'Great' former Champion
    Miguel Canto for March 1980, in an All-Mexican WBC Flyweight Championship bout.

    Chan-Hee Park's 'feisty style' had Miguel Canto's number in Busan, South Korea -
    so the Mexican Group thought that Guty Espadas 'wide-open hard-banging style' would dethrone the
    WBC Champion.

    SO MUCH FOR THAT PLAN...

    Chan-Hee Park had an excellent amateur career by going 85-6 with (23 KO's).

    * 1975/1976 South Korea National Champion at 106 lbs.
    * He was the 1976 South Korea representative at (-48 Kg) 106 lbs. 'Light-Flyweight'
    * 1976 Ranked the #3 (-48 Kg) 106 lb. Light-Flyweight Amateur (World Amateur Rankings)
    * 1977 South Korea National Champion at (-51 Kg) 112 lbs. 'Flyweight'
    * Was 'The Sugar Ray Leonard' of South Korea - with fast hands and great boxing skills.

    * Turned Professional on July 8, 1977 (Age 20 Years, 3 Months)
    * Went 9-0-0 (5 KO's) thru October 1978 - and earned a #8 WBC Flyweight Ranking.
    * All bouts were in South Korea (Either in Busan or Seoul)

    * October 21, 1978 - Was held to a 'disputed Draw' (Draw 10) by 'Little' Siony Carupo.
    Siony Carupo (Philippines) was 23-2-2 (4 KO's), and the GAB Light-Flyweight Champion
    as well as the #5 WBC-Ranked Light-Flyweight. Despite being the smaller man with
    'no punch' - 'Little Siony' circled and jabbed the 'daylights' out of Chan-Hee Park, only to
    get jobbed out of an earned Decision Win, with a 'disputed 10-Round Draw'.

    * Chan-Hee Park, now 9-0-1 (5 KO's) still maintained a #8 WBC Flyweight Ranking.

    'Little Siony' Carupo - 'a lightning fast 108 pounder', who could box beautifully from his 'southpaw stance' or
    trick you up by going into an 'orthodox stance'.

    No punch though at 23-2-2 (4 KO's) - entering his bout with Chan-Hee Park.

    When he fought Chan-Hee Park, it was the 'first time' 'Little Siony' had fought outside the comforts of the Philippines.

    See what happens when you have to 'travel' for a bout. A Win = A Draw.

    Chan-Hee Park got a 'gift'.

    On 'Little Siony' - you just couldn't catch him. He did 'parlay' that 10-Round Draw with Chan-Hee Park into
    a Title Bout with WBC Light-Flyweight Champion, *Sung-Jun Kim in July 1979.

    Of course, that bout too was in South Korea, and 'Little Siony' got jobbed again, by a (Split-Decision).

    More on Chan-Hee Park,,,,,,

    When #7 WBC-ranked Flyweight Chan-Hee Park 9-0-1 (5 KO's) took on the 'Great'
    Miguel Canto of Mexico for the WBC Flyweight Championship, Chan-Hee was 5-days shy of 22 years-old.

    With only 10-Bouts under his belt, and 20-months as a 'Professional.

    Entering the bout against Miguel Canto,,,,,Chan-Hee Park had not had a bout in 5-Months,
    since his 'controversial' and undeserved Draw-10 with 'Little' Siony Carupo.

    The bout with Miguel Canto was held at the Busan Gudeok Gymnasium, where over
    20,000 South Korean 'crazed Chan-Hee Park' fans attended.

    Chan-Hee Park, despite the hometown crowd, was a 3-1 underdog versus the
    Great Mexican. Canto, the 31 year-old WBC Flyweight Champion, was making the
    16th Defense of his title. Miguel Canto had been undefeated in the last 5 1/2 years
    (last loss on August 4, 1973), and had lost only 'one-bout' since November 11, 1970
    while going 49-1-0 over that 8 1/2 year span.

    The young Chan-Hee Park, out-quicked the 'slick' Miguel Canto from the out-set,
    and controlled the first half of the bout by using right-hand leads and counter left-hooks.
    Through 8-Rounds, Chan-Hee Park had a solid lead on the Scorecards.

    The Champion made a strong-charge in Rounds 9 thru 12 to close the gap on the Scorecards.
    But the young South Korean turned it on in Round 13, by staggering Miguel Canto with a tremendous
    right-hand to the jaw. The Champion never fully recovered from that punch, and Park went on
    to sweep the last '3' Rounds over the 'dazed' Champion, to win a 'Major Upset' Unanimous 15-Round Decision.

    Scorecards;
    148-145 (5-2-8 in Rounds) = Chan-Hee Park
    150-141 (9-0-6 in Rounds) = Chan-Hee Park
    147-146 (4-3-8 in Rounds) = Chan-Hee Park

    The Asian Boxing Press had it; 7-4-4 for Chan-Hee Park.
