calzaghe Hopkins was not interesting at any point, except for the vague fascination at how a old guy was beating up a near prime guy at will until he gassed out.
It's not going to evoke memories of Gatti-Ward but I don't think it'll be a snooze-fest. It'll probably have some ugly moments inside and be very measured from mid-range (where I expect most of the fight to happen) but have enough action to keep us interested. To use a Larry Merchant quote, I think it'll be like a violent chess match.
I get it, I certainly can't knock anyone for feeling the same way. If you where in Wards shoes how would you approach the fight? Would you stand toe to toe with SK because you're worried you might delivery a less than appealing fight for the fans? I'm not sure I support your train of thought here though I absolutely get it. When you're in that ring and your able to execute and keep in line with a particular strategy it insanely impressive, its probably the hardest thing in the world not to get into a shoot out especially with someone trying to take your head off, I learned the sh*t the hardway in that squared circle. The necessary evils of the sport force certain fighters to employ tactics that aren't always visually appealing however if they are effective I can't knock them for using it.
Just like Mayweather, the only thing that matters is the win for Ward. Moreover, Kovalev was very cautious against an old Hopkins. I can't see this being any different. This will be fought to Ward's advantage. We all know what will follow. Endless threads about Ward is a runner and boring as if that somehow changes the outcome.
Well said, I'm not completely confident Ward will win this one but one thing is for sure Ward will have a more complete book of alternatives in his pocket which gives him a distinct advantage from a mental perspective.
Ward will win a boring decision in absolute boring fashion.... he will then hold the belts hostage and fight once every 2 years. Kovalev will be labled as bum. For boxings sake, A kovalev win would be best for the sport.
Ward said recently that 'European fighters like you to be on the end of their punches'. I think he has Kessler in mind when he says this. I think, if he's still capable of fighting with that intensity, he'll fight SK in the same way he fought Kessler, with a lot of up-close mauling. The trouble is is that Kovalev is very good at catching guys as they come in (note Hopkins, Silakh and Pascal). Ward's chin is vulnerable. I think he gets caught coming in and gets hurt and it could end in that way.
