I didnt think either fight was close imo. Pender won both fights pretty easy imo.

 

People would have look into this fight and said Rocky got robbed. Thats what will happen. It was not relly as close a fight as people like to claim it was.

 

I've hardly ever seen anyone claim that decision was wrong; it's pretty undeniable Rocky won. However, perhaps this guy was speaking in terms of the fight itself actually going differently, much like the fellow who brought up the idea of Schmeling beating Louis in their rematch.

 

I never said that Charles should have got the decision its just that had it gone the other way it would have a huge impact on boxing history.

 

Duran beats Leonard by a razor thin split decision in New Orleans but loses KO 3 against Hearns in a unification bout. Loses to a ultra-motivated Benitez but still pounds Davey Moore. Beats Hagler and loses again by knockout in a revenge against Hearns. How do you see that in terms of pound for pound placement? Top 3 ?

 

And at the time there were talks for Floyd Mayweather Jr. against Winky Wright, and I guess Winky would've won, so this would have made him the best fighter pound-for-pound, and the best of his decade. After he would've fought Calzaghe and probably lost?..

 

What if Jack Johnson decided to fight Jess Willard over 15 rounds instead of 20. He did not loss another fight for more than 10 years and would have been considered the greatest ever if this was done.

Another is what if Corbett Jackson was never called a draw but went on for a fight to the finish. If Jackson won, it would have forced Corbett to either defend or lose a claim to the world championship. This may have meant the end of the colour bar, or John L may have reigned for a long time and even retired as champion, creating a number of different claims for world title and no unified champion for a long time. Again, it is unlikely the colour line could be drawn in these circumstances.

What if George Foreman had gotten the title shot instead of Buster Douglas and beaten an underprepared Tyson then retired. Unthinkable at the time, but in hindsight it might have made him the greatest ever, particularly if he skipped the Holyfield and Morrison fights but came out of retirement to fight the champion Moorer.

 

What if Holmes had gotten the nod against Spinks in their first fight and gone 49-0?

 

He goes to 49-1 in the rematch.

 

Harold Lederman had James Toney winning both of his light heavyweight losses against Montell Griffin. If Toney had gotten the decision(s) against Griffen, maybe Toney versus McCallum III would have been for the 175 lb title. Maybe we could have seen Toney against Tiozzo.

Toney vs. McCallum III was not in the class of the first 2, but Toney versus Tiozzo could have been entertaining. I think Toney would win handily, but that bout may have resembled his encounter with Jirov.

Anyway, Toney's status would elevate a bit with top notch wins in 5 weight classes.

 

Not the most ground shaking "what if", but how would the modern HW picture be different if Toney got the win against Peter in their first fight?

 

I saw the second Pender fight a few months ago on ESPN and I thought Robinson won easily. A real weird decision. The draw with Fullmer was a close fight which fairly could be seen as going to Fullmer. Fullmer certainly won the fourth fight and I don't think anyone could really dispute it.
