You are right about most things u mentioned. But the cage fighting championship seems like the premier organisation with the likes of Victor Lombard fighting on the cards. They are at big venues and have decent set all round set up. Other then the CFC most other organisations suck ass in oz. As i mentioned before it is gathering huge momentum in oz and throughout the world.
yeah I know it is getting popular around the world, which is good but boxing is doing well awell, there both got a place, but in Australia there bad, no structure at all and most of the fighters are not that good and 10 won't to put this stuff on tv, It is embarrassment, I watch one card last year on the Gold Coast, It was very poor to watch live, you just could not see a thing when the fighter are on the ground it was terrible.
your right about it being the premier event, the gym i train at runs the event, i couldnt believe it when i saw that they get 2-3 thousand people in to luna park, im a boxing fan first and foremost and mma is really starting to gather momentum in australia, for what reason i dunno maybe because the average skilled fighter can be good at mma because the grapple is a variable. hector lombard is animal they did well getting him as the headlining act, hes an accomplished fighter, great wrestler, he trains very hard, has a rock solid body, got a massive ego, and backs his ability 100 percent. he probably should be over in the u.s. trying to go into ufc as they did try to sign him at one stage. when it gets to the floor wrestling is wrestling u loved it when you were a kid but once you grow up you just want action... this boxing promotion being prob over is a kick in the guts, but remember mundine vs green was on the news nearly every days for 2-3 years straight and was the biggest revenue spinner in australia has ever had. boxing is boxing in the end when the best come to fight crowds come to watch, there is way more money in boxing world wide then mma but on a local level mma fighters are probably better of for the level fighters that they are.
boxing has dragged its arse for decades in this country and now mma is having a go and getting a bit of exposure everyone wants to have a whinge. All it would have taken is a few unified stables and promoters put something proffesional together, the best fighting the best and all that, then approach a few media outlets.. but no.. instead, (with respect to kostya, danny, briggsy etc...) we get two decades of pretenders and journeymen beating up philipinos and thais at the local rsl... dont have a go at mma boys its ganna be part of our future whether we like it or not.. I just hope this is the wake up call that gets aussie boxing out of the ****en stone ages around here..
There is nothing to fear at all. MMA in Australia is the lowest of the low. Boxing has 2 Magazines, 4 Radio shows, 3 competing pub and home broadcast providers, 3 vigorous forums, 10 years of FoxSports Friday Nights, Sky Ringside, A huge casual fan base ready to convert (See Green v MUndine) The Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame. PCYC's are filling up with boys, the AIS runs serious boxing programs and will be injecting big bucks into boxing after our abysmal Beijing. Main Event are now preparing for their "Post Mundine/Green Years" and are actively looking to Pay per view local cards. Sellout crowds all over the world. Huge superfights exploding across the calendar. Boxing is out of intensive care and ready to leave the hospital. UFC is light years from this level of market development. Its got a few forums and pay per view nuts and well attended novelty local promotions, much like Crusty Demons. As far as a real market is concerned its all front like the town in Blazing Saddles. Talk it up all you want fella's but lets see how MMA goes building a long term sustainable domestic market for what is sloppy unnattractive wrestling and pub level striking. I spoke to Main Event and contrary to what I read, Boxing does better numbers than MMA. There is also a completely different culture to Boxing. You see it in the respective contender shows as well. They attract different types of people. Boxing people buy into tradition and old smelly gyms and throwback fighters and arguments about fantasy fights between fighters of different generations, sometimes 150 years apart. Boxing never changes and thats why we love it. Like Swimming used to be till this year - Speedos, goggles, pool. (ignore this recent suit for this comparison). I always see MMA promoters and news trying to lurk onto boxing sites and forums like opportunistic jackals but never the reverse. Most boxing fans simply do not give a **** about MMA and never will. Like a Rugby League fan watching Aussie Rules, they respect the general athleticism but just don't get it or like it. MMA is not a patient mans game. It doesnt have redemptive power with troubled youth in urban centres across the world. Its about anger where boxing is about patience. The imatient angry thrasher always gets tamed in boxing but rewarded in MMA. MMA is a moving feast, tinkering and jiggery-pokery changes all the time to keep it entertaining to the ADD generation. Initially it was thrilling when the different martial arts were not mixed but then it blended into one homogenous steroidy angry soup with lots of wrestling and ungraceful kneeing nonsense and crap striking. Explosive and horrifying at times but it is a lesser product now than when it started. Its running out of ideas and the cult heroes of the sport are ....funnily enough the strikers like Kimbo and Tank Abbott. B-Grade boxers at best. But its not an Olympic sport, nor will it ever be. And while it all seems fluffy and unified under Dana White (Like boxing used to be), if the money grows and the market grows it will fragment into warlords like boxing and even (ridiculously so) Rock and Roll Wrestling. So the **** we are going through now they have ahead of them if they are truly to go to the next level. Snowboarding was supposed to take over skiing. Mike Wrubleski said that Basketball was going to take over Australia. But tradition is something that can't be invented and has a mystical effect on generation after generation as stories are handed down and comparisons made. Ali was Time Magazine man of the century. MMA hasnt had a single crossover star to date in how long? If boxing continues to produce Ali and Fraziers, Academy Award Movies, Margarito's and Cottos and Vasquez and Marquez' and Jack Darcy's and Griffo's and Dave Sands' and Fenechs and Azumah's it will always thrash the pants off UFC because UFC will never ever reach the grassroots level of boxing. And that is what counts in the long run in the difference between a gnarly extreme sport and a mainstream sport played in over 190 countries in the world. MMA has gone backwards pure and simple. I was expecting a nuclear storm but to paraphrase a great Australian former prime minister "It was like being flogged by a warm lettuce" and "all tip and no iceberg". Translation = a flash in the plan. The launch is the easy part, now comes the hard part, building infrastructure, promoters, stables of fighters, sponsors to back fighters. I look forward to seeing MMA try to pull it off. And if you do good luck to you but don't ride boxing. Our sport has as much to do with yours as rugby union does with Aussie Rules. And there is one last factor that differs MMA from boxing. MMA replicates a street fight and involves kicking in the head so once it gets to critical mass the Australian Medical Association will be successful in banning it. They eagerly look forward to the day. So its a dud bet anyway. It might even be the win the AMA need's to get off Boxing's tail cause we ain't movin anywhere soon. So bring on MMA I say, they will end up doing boxing some great "bad cop" favours. Boxing is a Tyrannosaurs Rex and MMA is a pimply teenager and we should clearly delineate the two. Viva boxing. Viva the Australian belt.
MMA is interesting to watch occassionally. But once they go to ground it's not the sort of spectacle that appeals to mainstream TV viewers. Head kicking and repeated elbows to the head with the claret flowing will never rate or last on FTA TV. MMA, unlike boxing, has no history or tradition.
I have no problem with MMA, I just think channel 10 id kidding them self with show it here in Australia, the level is very poor in Australia and boxing there is very good fighters and with a bit of money they can get some good match ups
Jesus christ where the hell did this come from.lol You could of stated the obviously in alot less words.Seriously. And dont forget a t-rex was a once formiddable force that has since dissapeared. Not exactly the best way to describe boxing.
think watt got what he deserved. he aint no einstein so it was matter of time. he's always been a thug and a stand over man. wasn't it also him found in a girls nightie in a strangers house ripped off his head a while back?
Yeah Hector is the business. He has had many Visa issues that havent allowed him to stay in the U.S for long periods of time.Im sure he is getting payed well here in Oz though being the main man of the organisation.
While MMA keeps appearing as a threat to boxing then its not yet obvious. Its given boxing the kick up the arse it needs and for the past 2-3 years the promoters in boxing have delivered more superfights than we had in the preceding 6-7 years. MMA is pitched as blue sky and upside aplenty and boxing as a cancerous old man when on fundamentals the opposite is the truth and an apples and apples comparison exposes that. MMA's evolution curve is flattening big time and is going to have to do something dramatic to break out of niche sport status. And as for the T-rex. It was more for the size difference but I see your point on the comparison:good Replace T- Rex with 5 metre killer Croc:bbb
Sweet Science, that was 1 of the best posts I have ever read on hear, MMA sux ass and attracts alot of hyped up dickheads atsch
Can someone please explain to me what is the link between adam watt and channel 10? does he work for channel 10?
Adam Watt had secured a 4 fight deal with Channel 10 next year for Golden Gloves Promotions, a new company he set up to link with Golden Gloves South Africa. The first one was to be on HD and then migrated to their traditional free to air channel.
