When the UFC wanted to go mainstream, it had to remove headbutts etc to be able to work with the established commissions such as Nevada, NJSAC etc Which is well and good but after having seen the first few UFC's it took something out of it IMO. You can't deny the phenomenon - the MTV generation are lapping this up
Superfights locally; Mundine-Green Um, the rivallry that divided a nation, Mundine-Soliman. I'll think of some more later. Fenech-Nelson III... Overseas we've had a pretty good couple of years, last year would probably have been the strongest in ages.
I'm not denying the international phenomenon Phil. Britney Spears is also an international phenomenon. I am saying that it has been a massive disappointment domestically 15 years after its launch. The reason boxing exists was because the Marquis of Queensberry wanted to separate boxing from sports that involved kicking and punching to the back of the head. His vision was that "you must not fight simply to win; no holds barred is not the way; you must win by the rules". Thats why we are on this forum, because we have a sport provides discipline and structure. MMA think they have stumbled on some sort of unique formula but that slop was exactly the reason boxing was created. And the MTV generation that I hear so much about. They lap anything up. Lets see hard infrastructure and hard numbers like every other sport is judged. It tends to go very quiet at this point of the debate but if there is something I am missing let me know. As Jack Nicholson said in Easy Riders "Talkin about it and being it, that's 2 different things"
A dissapointment to who? Definetely not the participants and fans - you cannot claim to be dissapointed because it is obvious you have no good thoughts about MMA. This us versus them by boxing fan boys is just old. The sport is established, is tightly regulated and is growing. You want hard data - check the yellow pages and see how many MMA and Muay Thai gyms there are, go along to a show and see first hand the attendance, get along to gyms and see open minded boxers cross training with MMA fighters to improve their street skills. Or just continue to get your info on a forum with an agreeing audience whining about MMA - you will convince thousands I am sure. And boxing existed well before the introduction of Marquis Of Queensbury rules and continues to exist in its original format via unlicenced boxing bouts held in the UK albeit nowhere near as popular as the regulated format - and it sure is remarkably like MMA! Anyway back to Adam Watt - boxing promoter and former champion who started where?:think
Ozzie, not having a go but whats your definition of a superfight? I'm taking the **** with Mundine-Soliman (that was the tag they used during advertising it) but surely Mundine-Green would qualify domestically as a superfight? Is it purse size, belts, prestige, grudge or all of the above? Any bout that gets the general public aware and interested in the outcome surely would qualify, Mundine-Green while not of international importance surely qualifies for the amount of interest it garnered.
Belts and prestige. 2 fighters with legacy going toe to toe. Lets be honest Green and Mundine aint **** in the world of boxing and probably never will be. Awesome aussie fighters but no world beaters.Mundine has no truely notable wins nor does Green.Beating drews,Solimans and Echols aint notable wins. Superfights are Mosley v De la Hoya Ali vs Frazier,Foreman You get the point.
I agree, but surely we're allowed to have a local version. Mundine-Green will be as big as it gets here for awhile, very rarely do we get two ok guys in the same division that are ranked in the upper echelon. I would never consider Mundines procession line of 'challengers' as anything more than an easy payday and not even getting close to a competitive fight. But at the end of the day its just a term than can be brought out and bandied around when they want to create hype.
Ok mate i should have refased that less skilled comment with, Most are skilled in some form of martial art but are not as good at others. There are many guys in there that cant throw straight punches, There are also guys who have little to no ground game. If they make the right matchups it can be exciting but watchind some guy with no stand up just trying to get his opponent on the mat to make him tap out is boring IMO.
