Channel 5 pulling out of Boxing??

Fat Mick should get some slack cut...he was the last promoter to get any fighters on mainstream TV, a large part of Frochs career was seen free to view

The channel 5 boxing seems to have been started to promote the PPV fights on Primetime (same owners). There's not much left on there to promote anymore.

To be fair I know plenty of guys who know eubank Jr through channel 5. It didn't achieve much but I don't think the rfury chisora fight did them any favours. Most of my non boxing fan mates watched and saw them as fat jokes.

 

He should just try and get on any channel he can, ****ing challenge or something.

 

The way that things stand at companies like ITV and Channel 5 or any of the terrestrial stations means that boxing is unlikely to be on our screens free for some time I would say. It's getting harder for those TV companies to make any money, they've invested heavily in their online infrastructure because they know that the future of TV is going to be on a "pay as you watch" basis and that with internet ready TV's already becoming normal the standard scheduling isn't going to carry on an awful lot longer and they want to stay ahead of the game especially after ITV got caught napping and took way too long to update the company and sort out ITV Player the first time around.

What this means for boxing unfortunately is that we're more likely to see more PPV become the norm, what they want to do is have more PPV but make it cheaper, rather than subscribing to Boxnation you'll have the option of purchasing 2/3 fights a month for around £5 through a dedicated sports channel. It might be broadcast by ITV or Channel 5 or Primetime or any channel really, it just depends which one has the faith in the purchasing numbers for whatever sports event they buy the rights to for that weekend.

There is hardly any live sport on terrestrial anyway these days so it's not a shock to me that this has happened, very bad news for Degale though as he's only just signed and is at a pivotal time in his career. Eubank is an easy sell just due to the name and also still young enough that he's racking up that unbeaten record rather than going after belts.

@Pa_ward1 co operator of the Team Fury Boxing website www.teamfuryboxing.com tweeted the verified account of Channel 5 this morning with the question "will channel 5 still be showing the Tyson Fury vs Steve Cunningham Fight on April 20th? then received the reply: Hi, we have not confirmed we will be showing this fight"

@Pa_ward1 then asked "but there's still a chance you mite be? @Channel5_tv reply's "We never say never, but it all depends on if a deal can be done. We will tweet if we will be showing any fights. Steve Gowans, the broadcaster's head of factual entertainment and sport, is one of two senior executives said to be leaving channel 5 imminently as part of a management restructure. Worryingly, Gowans' role will no longer exist after the restructure.

Channel 5 has been a recent key player in the British boxing TV market and the sport is once again left without a terrestrial outlet. The broadcaster had been showcasing the talents of Tyson Fury, James DeGale, Kid Galahad and Chris Eubank Jr

 

Funnily enough some matey at work who doesn't even like boxing just asked me when 'Eubanks' was next out.

A 40 year old female waitress that works in the cafe next to my work that has no idea I am a boxing fan was also saying that she had enjoyed the last Degale/Eubank fight and saying that it reminded her of the 90's when his old man was on terrestrial TV fighting. That was an indication to me that maybe it was starting to gather momentum, shame it's all going to be for nothing.

I agree with this. Fury has generally been in good, entertaining fights. Can someone please tell me what was so special about Hearn's last Sky card in comparison?

Ch5's boxing output has been remarkably solid.

British terrestrial TV, in general, is absolutely appalling. We have no quality dramas, and when people get excited about the childish Doctor Who and the generic Downton Abbey you know that the overall output is terrible. The focus is on reality TV, cookery programmes and really really generic crime dramas and sitcoms.

No place for sport whatsoever in the schedules any more. The TV stations have no idea what people actually want to watch, their tactic is just to produce unimaginative rubbish for the lowest possible cost.
