Character/personality - irrelevant except to the extent that it's good/bad for boxing

We may admire/like certain boxers as men - for their character and personality. We may feel they set a positive moral example in their day to day life/outside the ring. Thus, there might be honourable, generous, honest, modest boxers who give to charity and help poor children...etc. However, as much as this is worth respecting and taking into consideration when we judge a man, this is irrelevant when we judge a certain boxer, EXCEPT to the extent that these moral qualities/ personality traits improve the sport, make it more popular and allow it to be held in high regard by sports fans in general, or have the opposite effect.
    • Thus, for example, it matters a lot whether a boxer fights the very best out there or keeps padding his record just to hold on to a belt, calling himself Champion.
    • It matters a lot that there is no cheating, whether outside the ring or inside.
It MAY also matter that he is a nice guy who gives to charity, lives a modest life and keeps his feet on the ground and has a good relationship with his family etc., - but only to the extent that doing the opposite would bring the sport into disrepute or make it less popular...If it does't - we shouldn't let it affect our judgement of that boxer AS A BOXER.

For example, it doesn't matter whether Floyd has a good relationship with his father or not or whether he is grateful for what his family did for him. Nor does it matter whether Ricky is an ordinary lad, who visits his family regularly and stays true to his roots or whether he swears a lot...These aspects don't affect the way people view the sport to a considerable degree - they just colour the fans' attitude/affection for a certain fighter...Thus, no one really says: "I used to be a boxing fan but Floyd's ****-talk outside the ring has put me off" or "I used to hate boxing but I am a fan now because Ricky is a man of the people". However, people DO say, for example:" I used to be a football fan but all the diving, moaning and arguing with the ref and the high wages they are on and lack of contact with/ respect for the ordinary fan has put me off football"...

So, let us just agree that it's not important to concentrate so much on a fighter's character/personality trait unless it's good/bad for boxing to a considerable extent...

    Do you agree?

Or do you think that Floyd's ****-talk is puting sportsfans off to a considerable extent or Ricky's laddish attitude is making the sport more appealing to the ordinary sportsfan to a considerable extent?

The fact that the Mayweather/Oscar fight broke PPV records, yes Oscar had alot to do with that, but without Mayweathers annoying and ignorant behavior the fight would of never sold like it did.

The average fan needs fights to be hyped, so they can have a reason to watch it. Wether its Hopkins slapping Winky or Tyson telling someone he will **** them in the ass, its what gets people interested. I for one will say it helps the sport more than hurts it, as long as they show up to fight, I could care less what they say or do outside the ring.

You cannot judge any fighter from their behaviour in the media spot-light. It is irrelevant.

Apart from Hatton. He is clearly a *******.

I love Ricky! He is a hell of a fighter. Besides, he would have a drink with me down the pub - that's all that counts for me.

Your agenda to sully Ricky's reputation is very transparent. Please stop or you will be put on ignore.

He thinks being fat is a good thing.

The fool believes 12 weeks of training will get him up to Floyd's level of fitness

They are an efficient form of communication.

Only a fool would dismiss the use of smilies.

Only an inarticulate simpleton would resort to smilies to put his point of view across in the most effective way.
