The fact that there isn't a global boxing star today shows that having the ability to be a likeable character or at least a person that can draw fans to the sport, is an ability in itself.
Golovkin is charismatic as hell. He's just not American Plus Pacweather gave boxing a brutal savage low blow thats gonna take a long while to recover from
The last thing we need is charisma. Charisma means you're a talker, and there hasn't been a talker who's been a great fighter since Ali. May was a talker, and he ended up getting peppered with questions about Manny for years. We need KO artists, and many of them. Joshua, Thurman, Golovkin, Beterbiev - these guys will take Boxing back to the top. Loma will, too.
Being charismatic doesn't means that you are a talker, Dela Hoya, Leonard and Pacquiao weren't talkers. Sadly in these days, a big fight it's only made if the fight sells enough, so a fighter that can bring fans to the sport is always gonna be good for the sport.
Charisma isn't about trash talking. DeLa Hoya filled up a whole arena for his pro debut and won 150.000 dollars in that night, he also had thousands of fans at 15/16 years old. Leonard was one of the most popular members of the USA Olympic team and could barely walk in the Olympic Village cause everyone wanted an autograph, that being said by his olympic teammates. And i don't think i have to explain the following that Pacquiao had in the last years. Ali of course was the most charismatic boxer of all time.
Wilder has a lot of charisma. It was displayed when gloating over beating up an escaped mental patient, and even more so when dancing with joy after despatching a French pastry chef.
Oscar had a HUGE Mexican, American and PR following due to his Olympic run. Ray had America behind him when Boxing was huge. That guy was just meant to succeed. Same with Oscar. Pac put b*ms in seats because of his style. His style and willingness to face the very best won people over. Thurman has charisma, IMHO. As does AJ. Both can speak properly and clearly on the mic, same with Haye. No "er" and still trying to construct a sentence in there head whilst mumbling mindless nonsense. Add to it that that kayo most opponents... Charisma, for me, has always gone hand in hand with a fighter who kayoes fighters/back his words. They come across well (funny/charming/educated/well spoken) and are exciting to watch.
Anthony Joshua is probably going to be the biggest name. He doesn't have natural, raw charisma but rather, manufactured charisma - he absolutely does slot into it and has enough ability to play that well - that's what matters a lot.
The only fighter I see right now with star quality is Anthony Joshua. Global, not just in their countries.
If you're a machine (like young Foreman), you don't really need charisma. You sort of get a mystique just from being a mean mofo.
