my uncle used to go to the fights regularly, mostly round newcastle. i remember a few names he mentioned, thommy tear (not sure of the spelling) who he said was the toughest **** he ever saw , and charkey ramon. charkey was destined for great things. he was to be one of our greatest. he suffered an 'injury' that prevented him from boxing ever again...

    his record...http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=32032&cat=boxer

Not actually sure in truth Sally. Although he did leave the game abruptly. He was on the verge of a World title shot after the win over Jaques Kichichan in the early 70's.

There are some reports that he was granted a Jnr Middle title shot, but decided to move down to the Welter limit and chase world domination before that too derailed as the opportunities seemed realistic. Hence he moved to the Jnr Lightweight limit and posed as a superstar in the making until it came time to prove that also... he renegged all calls to prove himself and again shifted down to the Lightweight, then Jnr Featherweight and so on and so forth until he completely vanished off the face of the earth... Some so he was working for Kaiser Sultzer also...

i hope he does well. hes a great bloke by all reports. and always fair dinkum.

my uncle was dissapointed that ramons career ended. he was a real fight fan, and went to the newcastle fight religiously. they must have had regular, and good fights at newcastle in those days. i know lew and my other uncle, harry went nearly every week to the fights.

charkey must have fought at newcastle?

YES HE DID!!!!! I JUST looked up boxrec....!!!http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=32032&cat=boxer

also, my grandparents had a shop at stockton near newcastle, and the sands 'ritchies' used to go to the shops there. so my mum and her brothers knew dave etc. mum also knew ben lexon...

this thread has been re titled to what it should has been about.

charkey was a class above both mundines. its a pity we will never see them fight.

we know tony would have eventually agreed to fight charkey. but we know anthony would have RUN.

How old were you back in that time Sallywinder...I guess that you were not even born.

Mundine senior was far, far too strong and articulated (with big punches and skill)...he would have demolished Charkey....

Charkey and Anthony at light middle would have been a fabulous fight to watch......I would have voted, Anthony, a better boxer.........Charkey Ramon had episodes where he dropped his hands whilst attacking; Anthony would have picked that up, out boxing Ramon.

I would have loved to have seen Rocky Mattioli fight Ramon; it would have lasted about 5 rounds, Mattioli too fast, too strong, too skilled.

I dont dislike Ramon, just think that he was a bit over rated at the time; and a bit over rated by you now.
