Less to do with the fact he was scared of him as is often hypothesized, but more that even if he won he wouldn't look sparkling in doing so as a result of Burley's style. And the fact it was ultra high risk - low reward
He didn't duck Burley- the rankings don't bear that out. I wouldn't fight some dude who's poleaxing heavyweight contenders in sparring if I didn't have the monetary incentive either
I like Ray by dec, very high risk fight , but without the big $$$ reward .Burley did not exactly set the turnstiles alight.
Also I like Burley here, at his best. At times he could be far too passive and easy against certain opponents, but the real version with good hands- the destroyer who was knocking moore down while he was in his physical prime, dominating every round.... Would win. I think in terms of movement and range dictation Burley was the better. There is no doubt in my mind that he would win a boxing match. SRR's ideal would be to assault Burley with his combinations and overwhelm his feints and range game... He would have to eat terrible counterpunches to do so but I think he could take it with that chin of his.
Not to divert your subject,in which you are right, but Harry Greb, fought almost weekly from town to town, taking on everyone, ducking no one. He never feared fighting anyone regardless of color, reputation, SIZE or ability. And for that reason,I have him #1...
U all seem 2 forget that Burley fought Ezzard Charles twice and a drained Archie Wright once and Fritzie Zivic 3 times .
