Charles looks brilliant, sharp, fantastic vs Valentino in 1949

    Charles looks so fast in slick in there. So sure of himself, yet so patient. A complete fighter in every deparment and arsenal of tools. The final knockout blow in here is as perfectly timed, powerful, and dramatic as any one punch knockout ever thrown.


    Anyone else think he is the best former light-heavyweight moved up to Heavyweight to ever enter the ring?

    Anyone else think he has the best heavyweight resume out of any former light heavyweight moved up to heavyweight in history?

    You know a Charles fan such as I would be on this thread like butter on toast lol. Marciano twice, Joey Maxim, Harold Johnson, Joe Louis and Walcott four times that's a helluva resume.

    My former trainer, Gilbert Mitchel Sr, was on the same US army team as Ezzard and he always believed Charles was the best. Valentino was a pretty tough guy it appears, I thought he was going to go down several times earlier from flush right hands. I wonder how Conn and Loughran would have done against Charles at LH.

    Well perhaps that's because most of the film we have of charles is post baroudi(1948)? A fight where many said he lost his killer instict after he punched contender Sam Baroudi to death? Charles was an explosive puncher before that tragedy happened...They didn't call him the cobra for nothing! 1946-1948 he was an all time great puncher in the 175lb division.

    He looks fine to me maybe he's just not your glass of soda. There are many fighters and so many styles & opinions on them so we as fans are bound to come to disagreements. We all are entitled to our own opinions.

    Suzy I remember saying this was one of his best performances at Heavyweight and you shot me down for it. I might remember wrong though.

    I am a big fan of Charles and I do think this was his best Heayweight performances just a slow thought out dismantlement.

    I still love Charles vs Louis..I know that it's past prime Louis, but he wasn't completely gone..and Charles was beautiful in the subtle, catlike way he moved and still respected the old Brown Bomber. Charles fought with smarts and moxie..and I believe he could have opened up on Louis in the last 5 rounds somewhere and forced a stoppage had he so desired, but respect for the icon Louis ruled that out. This fight has always fascinated me just watch it to see how Charles moved.

    Charles WAS great vs Valentino...he truly was a Cobra..a nickname that's purely facetious and totally inappropriate when bestowed on someone like Carl Froch, BTW.
