The American streets don't produce real toughness anymore because of the welfare state. We currently have a very generous welfare state which allows low income people access to food and shelter.

It's not like it used to be back when Jack Dempsey was fighting. Where you won the fight or go hungry, in a literal sense.

Nowadays the real determination and desire comes from Eastern Europe, South America and the Phillippines. Which is why those guys are some hardass dudes. They come from nothing.

Yes because that's always the case, if you come from a rough part of town you must be hard as nails.

    Sort yourself out.

Marco Antonio Barrera came from a middle class family and went to do a law degree.

If this was true then 3rd world boxers from Africa who now have access to American style training and knowledge would dominate but they don't. Just a complete urban myth. "very generous" welfare state, only 23% of poor get cash benefits compared to 60% in the 90's. What are you talking about Trump/Cruz voter?! Welfare state is much more robust in the UK and they are on a surge lately in boxing. As I said, a myth.

I'd have to see those numbers. But in the 90s is when American boxers took a step back and stopped dominating the boxing world like they used to.

Poor, uneducated guys with nothing like Hagler, Hearns, Dempsey, LaMotta, etc. were all 80s and before fighters.

Back in the day American fighters were tough and hungry. Now we're Adrien Broner and Paulie. It's so embarrassing to watch. It hurts.

They also came from developing nations where they didn't have access to food like food stampers do.

Not that it matters, like you said, but Martin has done time

  12. Why would immigrants coming from the third world want to take up boxing?

They'd be just happy to have the basics, most people take up boxing professionally because they want to be rich or are unsatisfasted living with a 15-30k income.

Charles Martin moved away from St Louis when he was 12 years old - to Colorado Springs and then Phoenix, Arizona. He did no fighting on the tough streets.
