After researching a lot about Ezzard Charles and watching a lot of footage of him I was wondering how you guys would see a potential Jones Charles fight going at LHW. Personally, I think Charles would be able to KO Jones in the late stretch.

I agree. Charles would outwork him and find his chin at some point.

Easy to back any historical figure versus Jones now. Such is the tarnish his longevity and inevitable defeat has cast upon his long career. Back in 2004, following his victory over John Ruiz, or was it 2003, more would have backed the RJJ to prevail.

I'd go for Charles, despite that caveat, because fighters were just tougher specimans back then through activity and the less protected regulation of fights.

Ezzard Charles beat Archie Moore. Jones can claim no such scalp at 175 lbs.

Stylistically, Jones would have struggled to score with Charles and Charles had power, was well schooled, hardened with a good engine.

    Charles TKO12-15.

We've had this fight a couple of times in the last few months so you might not get the response you're after.

I've changed my mind where this one is concerned over the past year. I think Jones is one of the very few who could beat Charles at 175. In my opinion, to beat Charles at this weight you have to destroy Charles' rythym and composure - and in the case of Jones, you have to do it without compromising your own. But Jones could do that. He was fast and awkward enough that he could get that kind of job done.

I pick Jones to outpoint Charles in a close one, but in a series of 3 I would expect Charles to win one.

McGrain I have to disagree a little bit on this one. From the film I see of Charles I don't see him as necessarily a rythmic fighter. He could appear so at times, but he would often slug it out as he really did have great power and and I also have seen him as a very skilled inside fighter. With 15 rounds I just find it difficult not to see Jones staying on his feet. Jones was extremely difficult to sit back and counterpunch against, he was far too fast, awkward, and confusing for that, but the more film I see of Charles the less I think he would try to initiate that kind of fight. I see himself as being smart enough of a boxer to keep Jones from nailing him consistently and being enough of a puncher to be able to catch Jones with the K.O. shot.

.......all of the charles by ko posts are correct, especially if the pre-baroudi charles was in there. post baroudi....jones might go the fifteen and lose a wide decision.

RJJ 10-5 or UD - You can't hit what your eyes can't see.

RJJ just had too much movement and would also beat Charles to the punch at every corner. Charles would miss more than he ever missed in his career and each time he missed he'd be countered. Charles would have his successes and make it tough but overall is going to have nightmares with RJJ as many would

As for RJJs chin - it detoriated with age and he took plenty of notiable shots in his career, only a fool would say otherwise. Anyway maybe RJJ wouldn't get tagged big in the whole fight.

..charles rose to the top of one of the great periods for light heavyweights....archie moore, jimmy bivins, lloyd marshall, charlie burley (a middleweight who beat light heavies)....are the pinnnacle. joey maxim headed the secondary group. i'm not sure that jones even makes it in there....but, darn, i said i'd let my statement stand on its own.

i am happy for you jones worshippers that you've been able to see so many of his fights. too bad you didn't see these other guys.
