[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81non05aKX4&feature=related[/ame] Don't know if this has been posted, I ran into it just now. Does anyone know if who made this is a poster here on the classic forum? If it hasn't been shared, enjoy this **** fellas :good
I'd like to see way more of these kinds of videos. It could make a great thread here on the classic, with all the folks we have around here. If I find the time, I'd like to try to make one on Archie Moore.
Honestly, the bias in this video is just ridiculous. Nothing against Burley, but look at his opponent. The guy is absolutely incompetent. Frankly, he sucks. For one thing, he's nowhere near active enough. No inside game, no volume, telegraphs his punches. It's easy to look good against a guy like that. Show me Burley against a pressure fighter with volume, then we can see what he was made of.
I disagree with everything you just said about Oakland Billy Smith, but agree that stylistically this is just the type of guy Burley should feast on, so the video is in that sense misleading.
Are you ****ing high? This guy boxed a draw with ATG Archie Moore and you can see him feint no less a personage than Harold Johnson onto a one-punch KO on YouTube. And no, no ex-welterweight should be "Feating" on the hardest punching light-heavyweight of his generation. This is something that has only ever happened once. Here.
The guy was very limited, as demonstrated in this video. He's barely throwing any punches. As the bigger man, he's doing nothing to impose himself on Burley. He has no idea what he's doing and doesn't make any adjustments. Burley is basically just potshotting him at will. The video criticizes Oscar de la Hoya, but Oscar would do a lot better against Burley than Billy Smith.
The guy was very limited by Charley Burley as demonstrated by this video. You can see him looking a different fighter against Johnson, Moore and Noble if you bother to look before opening your mouth. Probably not worth it though as if you can't even understand what you see when it is explained to you with this amount of loving care, it's probable you can't be reached.
You trying to present Smith as some kind of master boxer is just absurd. Burley is doing absolutely nothing to make Smith so low volume and limited in terms of tactics. It's clear that that's his style. Smith is just standing around at mid range, hoping to hit Burley with single shots, many of them telegraphed. Smith has no jab worth speaking of, no inside game, no volume, and no defense. How is he supposed to win this fight other than a lucky punch?
I haven't done any such thing. Your presenting a fighter that beat Harold Johnson, Lloyd Marshall and Chase as well as boxing a draw with Archie Moore, in black and white as "not knowing what he is doing" is patently absolutely ridiculous.
"Boxed a draw with Moore." :rofl He got a draw only because Moore threw even less punches than he did in that fight. Smith doesn't know what he's doing in the sense that it's obviously not working for him and yet he just continues with it and doesn't try anything different.
I'm only hazarding a wild guess here, but perhaps they threw around the same amount? And what on earth is your point? If, for some reason you are uncomfortable thinking about this draw, just consider the ATG fighters he beat, that should help. And the level of control Burley exerts is explained to you SO carefully in the video, and yet you still don't understand it. Oh well.

Hipster-esque video for people like bodhi to feint a wank over. He's doing textbook stuff that most well schooled boxers do
It's hype and legend-making of a fighter who was possibly under-hyped in his day. It's a very good video.
Burley was so underrated he became overrated. He was better than he was given credit for during his active days but in the final analysis he became overrated. The guy was a very good fighter kind of a george benton or holly mims type.
