Looking at youtube i found this video which breaks down some boxing fundamentals in respect of old school fighters and modern techniques. Whoever made this video deserves massive respect. Now i see why Charley Burley is rated so highly and rightfully so.

Top 15 P4P great. Would of given Ray Robinson all he could handle, perhaps even beat him. I'd certainly pick him to at least split a series with a prime Sugar Ray. Seen this video on both the Training & Classic forums and I still keep watching it. His style was timeless.

Extraordinary!! A video of this caliber can hardly be apt for the general forum, it seems...

Truly, the classic stance is much more defensively minded. Think James Toney, Floyd Mayweather. When you stand nearly sideway from your opponent, you not only put your head away from the center of attack, but you also maximize your jabbing range. Coupled that with the use of shoulder roll to defend against right hands, this stance is well neigh impregnable, and perfect stance for counter.

The movement from this stance consists of stepping your lead foot to the left (from orthodox) and then pivot off of it. Try it. Stand sideway from your imaginary opponent, step your lead foot one step to the left, and then pivot off of it. It will put you nearly a mile away from your opponent coming straight at you. And since you are not bouncing off the the side, at anytime during your movement you are poised for counter.

He was very modest. When asked about Sugar Ray and him, he said something like, "When God asked us 'Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?', I guess I didn't raise my hand fast enough.'".

A rumor going around was that Sugar was asked by his manager if he wanted to take on Burley. Sugar said something like " I thought you were my friend!".

It's a brilliant video. What it leaves partly unsaid is what a hard puncher Burley was. He forced JD Turner to quite, and Turner was out-weighing him by anything up to 80lbs.

Burley makes all this skill look effortless, thats the amazing part. When you consider that his opponent in the video is fighting in a more modern style you see how burley may well have stomped modern era fighters.

He's one of these fighters (by all accounts), who controls the pace of the fight from centre ring via stamping authority with his shots and being technically sound, 'cute' as they say. He's the kind of guy that can make his opponent feel handcuffed because his shots keep slipping off body parts they're not meant to be landing on, and he's constantly getting tagged himself. Think Winky Wright but with more of an arsenal, just better from my readings, for sure.
