who wins in a head to head fight Who had the better career at 160 Who was more deserving of a title shot in 46?
The quote about "Rocky G.": "He was the best Middleweight in the WW Division (no Jr. MW Division back then) Though Rocky G. provided some super "shootouts" with Zale & SRR at MW. Going with Burley as more deserving....to get the long going question resolved once & for all. http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/on-...his-own-good-charley-burley-was-born-in-1917/
Burley could fight! rocky was just an Action fighter with a big Right Hand. burley was on another Level. he´d stop rocky imo.
Charley Burley would have stopped Rocky Graziano. Of course, Graziano's brain trust probably would not let their charge fight Burley even if the latter was a good gate attraction. - Chuck Johnston
I can't see graziano winning this one yes he had power but burley had power and great boxing ability. Personally I'd take burley by late stoppage and rocky to be cut lumpy and bumpy by the end of the night and possibly thinking well nobody up there was looking out for me tonight . Burley deserved a title shot for years so I'm always going to say burley on that question
I have been reading ringside reports of Charley Burley's bouts over the last few weeks. The information that I looked for in such reports were the gate receipts and what the impressions that writers got while watching Burley in action. Far too many times, Burley's bouts were rather tepid and didn't draw well at the box office. I have thought about what could have been done for Burley to get lucrative bouts and at least one shot at a world title. One possibility is that Burley's fighting style could be changed into a more crowd-pleasing one. Both Willie Joyce and Harry "Kid" Matthews use to be safety-first fighters before their makeovers. Afterwards, Joyce and Matthews were much more exciting and far better gate attractions. In addition, both Joyce and Matthews had boxing skills after their makeovers. - Chuck Johnston
Charley Burley was NEVER knocked out. The odds are a million-to-one against Rocky doing it when kayo specialists like Lloyd Marshall, Ez Charles, and Archie Moore couldn't. And the odds are even greater against Rocky winning a decision. As far as being an over-blown welterweight, Burley could handle the big guys. He was outweighed quite a bit in his fights against Charles, Moore, Billy Soose, Georgie Abrams, and Oakland Billy Smith, each of whom had been or were to become champions or No. 1 contenders.
Burley wins the fight, but if he lets it go the distance there's a chance that he loses the decision, no matter how one sided the contest is.
