Sorry i'm seeing your reply late. I still haven't got my book back that i lent out, but i know pretty much the quote off by heart. When asked if he was bitter about how the career paths of him and Robinson transpired respectively, Burley replied 'No, in our lifetime there could only be one Sugar Ray, God asked me and Walker Smith ''which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray Robinson?'', i just didn't raise my hand fast enough.' It's been a couple of years since i read it, but it's something like that.
Thanks for that one, been ages since i read them, i lent the book i have out of Burley a long time ago and haven't went to get it back yet. Burley is truly not bitter in my view, i genuinely don't think that's a front. Thanks again.
Robinson was only a welterweight still campaigning for a shot at the welter title at the time that Burley was already one of the top MW contenders. Plus in '42, Robby was still only a couple years into his career. I don't know why people make it sound as if he was under some sort of obligation to go up and fight Burley.
Do you consider Bolden on a par with Burley,Marshall,Williams? I dont.his record is won 65 lost 35. However, your question, Zale and Bolden fought 5 times Zale won 3 ,Bolden 2 First fight in 1937 Bolden wins a dec his 5 th fight ,Zale has had 32 ,Bolden was just 20 that month Second fight 1937 Zale takes a dec Bolden is 4-0-1 Third fight in 1938 Zale takes a split dec. Fourth fight Zale takes a dec Fifth fight 1939 Bolden takes a dec. I dont think at that time Bolden was seen as any thing like as good as the Murderers row. Later he did beat Bivins,Musto ,and Reeves. And took a split dec over Lamotta. Bolden also lost to Burley Bivins x2 Yarosz Overlin x2 and Maxim So yes he fought Zale ,but, imo, he was NOT part of the Murderers row that I was referring to when I said top black fighters ,he was a novice for his first 3 fights against Zale, and still won one of them.
oops sorry you got the wrong end of the stick i actually believe your post but i highlighted the bit 'One of my freinds.' i was saying you didnt have freinds. you idiot scouse couldnt understand a joke. :rofl:rofl :rofl:rofl that was the only time he was ranked number 1
Its a point I've raised many times, why would SRR go the other side of the country to fight a dangerous, low-money, much heavier fighter, quasi-boring opponent, who wouldnt sell many tickets, when he was chasing the Welterweight title. Its quite simple, high risk/low reward
i dont love scouse **** now lets leave it at that were hijacking the thread away to watch some more fights anyway Griffith vs Ortega is up next
