Add Beau Jack alongside Fritzie as another contemporary who said S.R.R. was a better fighter than Burley.
Moore gave the impression he thought Burley was some kind of God that he shouldn't have been in the ring with didn't he? Do you think it might be because he absolutely schholed him at his own game?
I think recieving the beating of a life-time from a fighter would impact the way you see that fighter, for sure. But look who Archie fought.
I know yeah, it really is some of the highest praise, when you say 'he fought the greatest fighters ever', you dam better be talking about Archie Moore. Wasn't it the type of fight though where both men had the same ideas, but Moore just couldn't do **** because Burley was just better everywhere? What i meant was maybe getting taught a lesson at what you are great at yourself would have you completely in awe of your master. Not a discredit to Burley mate, not at all.
Moore certainly saw it as a lesson in boxing. He describes it as such, I think you could almost say that Burley finished his education.
Moore was clearly yet to hit his prime when he faced Burley, though. Yes, he was older, yes he'd already faced some very good competition, and yes he was obviously already a very talented fighter, but he hadn't really found his niche yet, nor distinguished himself from the fighters he later would (namely the Murderer's Row). Burley, on the other hand, was at the peak of his powers against a fighter who had similar skills attributes, just not as developed or experienced. This would've made him the perfect foil for Moore at this stage, and as McGrain has said, one that would've educated him. On the other hand, it would've also given him an extremely high appreciation for Burley.
And let's not forget that Charley wasn't too fond of Moore at the time, hence the disdain he showed for him in the ring.
Burley was shut down by fighters like Charles and Bivins who were badly inexperienced at the time and mostly fighting just on their raw talents. If they fought in their primes at the same weight, I would favor Robinson over Burley, given that Robby was about as talented a phenom that ever lived.
I heard that Burley was up all night drinking whiskey the night before the Moore fight, and Moore was quite embarrassed. I think this stuff all adds to Moore's praise of Burley.
There's a lot of debate about exactly what occured pre-fight with Burley. That's just one of the stories.
What else is there? If i've heard anything else my memory isn't serving me well right now. I'd appreciate some rumours Pea.
