Burley took the fight on about the shortest notice possible, so there's no telling what he was doing the night before the fight. He was working on the docks that day when he got the call to go fight Moore that night. He finished his shift that evening, and then went straight from the docks to the arena.
And here's another one of the stories. Or is it fact? I don't know. Some sources say he had up to two weeks notice, some say he was cross country when he got the call.
I think that's undoubtedly true. I almost think of Moore coming into his prime after the Burley match. But it wouldn't necessarily make his thoughts on Charley any less valid.
Raw talents and size advantages. They were naturally bigger men which neutralised Burley's strength advantage. It helps to close the experience gap.
My guess is that Charley was up all night playing poker with guys who were drinking whisky and limbs were added. I don't beleive it's possible to school any version of Archie Moore with a hangover. The manner of the win is the key. It was a thrashing.
I don't believe this story. He may have been working on the docks, but the fight wasn't on the type of short notice that people think. There's apparently a note of the up and coming fight in a program of the previous week's fight. Regardless, I don't see how the notice the fight was taken on has any impact on what he was doing the night before and how it might be learned. It's more likely he was drinking the night before if he believed he didn't have a fight the next day, I should say.
I've heard that at some during his career, Burley relocated to the West Coast and won a string of fights against much bigger men. Fact or folklore?
ray arcel once asked ray robinson why dont you give burley a shot and according to arcel robinson replied i thought you was a friend of mine
what you mean maybe. Its 99% true in a similar fight i always pick the faster guy look at Leonard vs Benitez also. I think that is the case for the Moore fight
I wasn't taking away from you, i just don't like using definite terms. But in stylistic terms Benitez and Leonard are worlds apart for me. Regardless of the pattern of the fight.
ok no problem like i said its 99% right in my eyes obviuosly the occasional one gets trhough i know stylistically they are world apart but both fighters tried to fight a similar fight and the faster guy won.
