My five part series that exhumes and reanimates Jack Chase has been submitted. The first intallment should be up soon on TheSweetScience.com and I will be sure to let you know when it is. The boxing historians and aficionados on ESB Classic are going to find it interesting -at least, that is my hope. It's a different treatment than "The Gods of War" -this one is a story of a man who we all can relate to at some level. He was an ...imperfect... man, though a great fighter in an era of great fighters. Chase was operating in a place where so many dragons seemed to converge at once. It was like Armageddon in California during the time that he went out there. Chaseremains a mystery to boxing historians, though most would agree that he was a major player on the West Coast of the US in the early 40s. There is misinformation out there about him and I'm confident that I've cleared some of it up. Here are some of the mysteries addressed in it: * What's his real name? Where did he come from? * What's the story with the claim that Chase had 66 straight victories at the onset of his career? * Did he go to prison? For what? For how long? * What the hell happened the night he shot Aaron "Tiger" Wade? The research behind this ate up my whole summer. It even took me to Colorado -and I've never been further west than Brooklyn. I spent a fortune, but got access to death certificates, obituaries, fight reports for all of his major fights, Census reports, prison records and even juvenile records.
I've been waiting for this ever since you gave me that first nose at the plan. I'm genuinely very excited. This is going to be the defining moment for Jack Chase and you have plenty to live up to because I honestly believe it will never be equalled. You're going to close the blinds on this fighter my friend.
I just got the advance and am correcting some margin issues... Yeah, the gems I managed to dig up exceeded everything I expected to find. There is some speculation, but I think that those parts are highly defendable.
Part 1: The Dead End Kid here: http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/8233/chasing-jack-chase-part-dead-end-kid/
This is amazing stuff Stonehands - in my book as good as it gets - you've really done something good here - I really envy you having been able to do this - if I lived in the states this is the kinda thing I would love to try to do - good work man :good
...They are revamping the site and so my essay is not accessible right now. In the meantime, we can get a gander of things to come by taking a look at one of Chase's major opponents in Lloyd Marshall: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXDitbm6CRA[/ame] He's ~36 here, but a good idea of his style is discernable. Interesting...
Really enjoyed that read, Stonehands. I love the human interest stuff, the why's behind the what. A real sense of setting and history, social and psychological factors... Is this the first installment? I'm hooked, wanna read more!
Part 2 is up: "A Candle in the Glove" http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/8247/chasing-jack-chase-part-candle-glove/
