What a terrible argument. You assume because you never kept up with certain fighters and you have very limited knowledge that it means Chavez is actually greater than guys like Greb, Langford, Armstrong, etc? Seriously, one of the worst arguments I've heard.

Yep I probably have Arguello higher than most also (somewhere in the 22-25 range). Aaron Pryor is another one of my favs, and I rank him pretty high simply because he is a monster h2h

I think u should rank monzon higher, sure hes just a 1 division champ but in reality there was no super middleweight or cruiserweight division in his days. So his options were to move up and face a murderous puncher, or go to heavyweight and win the belt off frazier/ali/ or foreman.

#19 is not too bad, but i think he should be above archie moore, joe gans and bob fitzsimmons.

Underrated technically, you can see setting traps to counter off Wilde's shots in the second clip. In the first clip, just ferocious.

I think he should be after Carlos Ortiz and Carlos isnt top 5 anywhere so whereever you put Carlos then Chavez should come after. I say somewhere between 25 and 50.

Chavez on top of pea due to accomplishments, Pea was good at what he did but i would never put him on top of chavez. And i wasnt arguing that since we didnt see these old fighters that they were out of the picture. I mean that alot of people will just put them up there just simply cause they've heard their names mentioned as good fighters, and not because theyve seen their skills.

both these guys had terrible defense. i think if they were to fight against todays fighters they would get about as far as hammed did.
i dont believe you can accurately compare fighters who fought 70 years ago to modern day fighters. technique, training and nutrition have all evolved. everyone has their own system for comparison and no one can honestly say theirs is flawless, because there is no way to tell.
i would put chavez in the top 15 of fighters i can realistically assess.

 

Due to what accomplishment in particular? Chavez, as good as he was, was not on "his way out" when he fought Whitaker. No more so than Whitaker was. And the fight took place outside of BOTH of their best weights.

 

You are clearly missing the point...when these "oldies" were breaking heads and trailblazing the path. RJJ, JCC, whoever werent even a pigment of someones imagination.

A fighter..with his heart and essence cannot be captured and put in a bottle..it cannot be duplicated. They are measured in the time they fought and the competition they faced.

What I cant tell you is how modern fighters of today would do back then...there is no way to know because they have not yet existed.. It can only be discussed going forward because we cant turn back time.

What I CAN tell you with certainty though ..is that given todays means, these so called "old greats" would still be great today.
