Both at their 135 best would have been a good fight. The Camacho of the Ramirez fight would have been tough too.
More than just being past his prime physically, Camacho wasn’t the same fighter mentally. He wasn’t always a runner. He moved but he used movement to setup punches. After Rosario, he was far less aggressive. Clearly the guy had a good chin but he didn’t want it tested. Guy was tough though. He took some shots late in his career. Had they fought earlier, Camacho would’ve been more confident and physically sharper. Chavez still would’ve gotten to him at some point and then he would’ve got on the bike. Should’ve been a closer fight though.
That punch by Rosario sure changed Hector. I would have thought that taking that punch and actually surviving might have given him confidence he could take anything. That is a punch would would have knocked out anyone. But it seemed to make him thing "I never want to go through that again" so he didn't have the confidence.
It caused Cornelious Boza Edwards to comment, All Camacho Did Was Run, after their Sept 26 1986 title bout.
At that time, Julio was cutting more lines than a cripple at Disneyland. Hector couldn't hold a candle in that department either. JCC = GOAT
I'd honestly have to rewatch the fight, havent seen in it in nearly 30 years... I always liked Camacho but thought he always fell short in big fights and led an undisciplined lifestyle outside the ring. I think based on that Chavez would always beat him but I will say the few times things werent going Chavez's way, usually in fights were he was past his prime, he did not take it well, and would get frustrated. I think that Camacho at his best had the tools to fluster and frustrate Chavez. . but it would always be a longshot
You know that morning of the fights I think it was a Friday because I remember getting ready to go do what I was doing in those years which I think was a college class, but I forget now-and I read the paper something like Bramble was 4-1 to win. And I thought honestly how is Bramble going to get out of the way of the left hook. I thought this looks easy for Rosario since he got that hook on Camacho and Bramble doesn't move back. It is odd how now I would pick Bramble to back up Rosario and win battle of stamina, but in those years I picked better because I stayed simpler. As it turned out Rosario was just better. In the first round he landed a left hook early enough and Bramble started to back up and looked flustered trying to switch, and Rosario started to land his jab. Terrible style for Bramble. Well near the end of the round one I think I remember Rosario turning to his left to throw that left uppercut/hook, and in round 2 he landed it with Bramble on the ropes and then a minute of pummeling and Bramble went down and stayed down saying his eye was poked. Actually right near the end of round one I recall Rosario landed a right hand and I could be wrong but Bramble sort of wobbled slightly back to his corner. He looked like he was shaken. But the view was not close really. so you could not see as well as other fight views.
The difference between Chavez and Camacho is Hector wanted to have it all popularity and fun and everything else. Chavez wanted to win and knock guys out. There was a different mindset.
Hector Camacho would outbox Chavez to a clear decision 1985 or earlier. '86-87 toss up. Anytime after JCC by clear win.
Camacho won big fights. He had a target on his back of his own doing. He got everybody's best. He didn't lose a fight until 1991 against Haugen and that was debatable. Ramirez, Rosario and Boza Edwards were big wins.
