Chavez clearly threw the fight...

He was just otherworldy dissapointing. No clarity from the corner, no instinct, poor plan A and no plan B....the list goes on. Plus it didn't help that Canelo was clearly better.

 

Losing and losing like he did last night are 2 different things I think. Most of us thought he wasn't going to win but most probably thought it was going to be a bit more competitive...

 

Yeah, totally agree. It was a massive let down. The cash-out to beat all cash-outs. i think he knew after a couple of rounds he couldn't win and just went into survival mode. Canelo also found out he doesn't carry his punch up to 164, so he's gonna need to box at his very best to handle GG at 160...

 

Chavez's corner was terrible.

 

I disagree about not carrying his punch up to 164. Chavez has a good chin and Canelo stopping him was always going to be difficult. Canelo bloodied Chavez's nose though after a few rounds and really swelled up his eye, so I think that's definetly a sign that Canelo has definite power. Canelo finding out that he doesn't carry his power up to in weight would be if Chavez wasn't marked up, didn't have his head snapped back, and didn't retreat as much as he did. Chavez definitely felt Canelo's power and it made him very gunshy. I think you're in a little bit of denial about just how much power Canelo had on those punches. He didn't stop Chavez or knock him down, but Chavez's face is the best evidence as to Canelo's power that was on display. Kellerman and Roy Jones were talking all night about the difference between thudding power and speed-based power with snap on the punches. The key to me was the speed on Canelo's punches that's going to be a problem for Triple G. Canelo may not have enough power to actually stop Triple G, but he has the speed to get his attention. I mean Canelo definetly got Chavez's attention in that fight, speed / power whatever you want to call it. Chavez has an incredible chin, and I'm not sure that Triple G would have be able to stand up to those punches that Chavez took last night. Then again, Triple G is better boxer than Chavez and won't just stand there and take it all night like Chavez did.

 

Yeah, I'm not in denial over anything. I made an observation. Denial would suggest I have invested in that observation, and I haven't.

But having corrected the psychology part of your post, I tend to agree that maybe I was being a little harsh in my assessment of Canelo's power. That said, don't you think GG has a chin as good as JCC's or perhaps even a little better?

Of course you're right, GG is a better technician than JCC and will be way more motivated. So I can see a case for Canelo winning but not by stoppage. That said nothing is impossible in boxing, so who knows?

 

Chavez didn't "throw" the fight in that sense. He just realized he was going to lose and accepted that like a mouse, not a man.

 

And a much richer mouse after than before. He earned a lot of cheese...

not likely, nor was it necessary.

instead, the fight was carefully engineered by oscar for the outcome everyone saw.

in other words, the lackluster performance was more or less pre-ordiained the moment the contact was negotiated and signed--in particular the timing (2016 versus say around 2011) and the weight limit (a weight that Chavez hadn't made in years)

 

Chavez jr probably aint really chavez sr. Son...his mama banged a cartel dude or the lawn dude or something. In genetics the kid gets the height from the dad. Jr is way taller and like 80 lbs heavier. They dont even look alike. He doesnt have his fighting spirit...nothing! I wouldnt be shocked at all if he truth came out.

Dude should retire and save or invest this fat pay check because no one will want to see his crappy fights anymore.

 

There was no need to throw the fight. Chavez was a dead man walking at the weight and he sucks when he is fresh.

 

It would only have been weird or unpredictable if Chavez had fought differently.

 

both Canelo and JCC stood after the first round, but JCC sat on his stool each round after.

i don't see fighters stand between rounds too often; more so than missing the minute to rest the their legs, it's much more difficult for their corner to communicate with the fighter, to supply water, apply ice, etc.

so standing between rounds sends a very strong message
