I see how busy Roach is with Pac, Khan and all the other fighters he has at Wild Card, I think with Roberts style, language not being a barrier, I think it would be a perfect fit. I understand Garcia has a few fighters himself but reading and seeing how he makes time for his fighters, I think Chavez would be right at home there in Oxnard. Garcia can teach the pressure, inside fighting style that Chavez Jr does so well. Being around your own also helps and to be honest with the Margarito connection, I'm surprised Chavez didn't seek out Robert Garcia.
Well seeing the drastic improvements he's made under Roach, and how far he has come, I think it'd be foolish to leave him. Pointless thread.
Physically he's made improvements but has he made improvements in his boxing all that much? Roach was supposed to turn him into this outside boxer and Chavez has done what he's always done, bang on the inside. I think Ariza has had more of an influence on Chavez than Roach has.
watch chavez's fights before roach, vanda etc then watch his fights with duddy, lee etc. huge improvements. But if he is gonna change trainers Ronnie Shields or Cotto's coach is the way to go.
He's looked a lot better on the outside, working his way inside. He has developed a pretty good jab, and a really nice straight right hand from the outside, to set up his left hook, and body work on the inside. His footwork working his way in has gotten better, as has his timing. Why try to change what he is best at, which is an inside fightingh, with a great left hook, and great body work? Roach took what he was best at, and went with it. Rather than trying to revamp his entire style, and make him something he is not. I just see absolutely no reason to ruin a good thing. He has looked good as of late, and only seems to be improving. Garcia hasn't done anything to prove he's a better fit for Chavez.
According to Roach he was supposed to bring an outside game to him, I haven't seen it. So I disagree with the improvements all that much. I think he has improved somewhat in the things you have said but not that dramatically IMO. Being in the gym with the quality of guys Roach has will make you better but Chavez for his length doesn't have a great jab, his head movement is very limited (even though he blamed that on leg cramps) so I don't see it as much as you do. Garcia tends to really teach that inside, pressure style fighting that I think would fit perfectly with Chavez. He loves to work his way inside, throw the left hook to the body and wear his opponents down just like his daddy. I honestly was surprised when they announced that Chavez would be training with Roach, it was an odd fit IMO.
Nacho is in Mexico and is a different style of trainer. He's a throw back to the days when they TAUGHT the art of boxing. I don't see Chavez in Mexico City training with Nacho
Yes, his head movement is rather limited. He's definitely not a very technical fighter on the outside like he can be on the inside at times. I don't think he's ever going to be that great on the outside, no matter who trains him. He's pretty set in his way of fighting, and that's not a bad thing really. I do think Roach has made him better on the outside than he would have been otherwise. He can really drop that straight right in, and he can turn, and pivot some as well. Garcia hasn't really proved he's all that great on making boxers better on the inside. Rios got exposed against Abril, and he didn't make Margarito any better. I think his dad probably works with him a lot on his inside game, as well as Roach. Roach will also just keep drilling the basics, and continue to improve his technique on the straight right hand, and his footwork coming inside. I don't think Garcia would be any worse for Chavez, I just don't think he would really improve him either. I'm sure if Chavez loses to Martinez in humiliating fashion, or loses down the road, then he will leave Roach, and probably will go with Garcia.
You make good points and I agree mostly. I also don't think one can underestimate being around your own and what that can do for you. I know Garcia wouldn't have the language barrier and Chavez would feel at home with him. I think Garcia is an excellent trainer because he learned from his father and his father really knows boxing. Just looking at Pavlik's left hand, it seems a lot better since he's been with Garcia. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks llike Marg or Pavlik but if you listen to Garcia in the corner, he seems to say what needs to be said and doesn't freeze under pressure. I really like his training style and tend to train fighters the same way. I don't know it was just a thought and I agree, if he does lose to Martinez, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Oxnard in the near future.
Chavez Jr. against Manfredo Jr. showed a significantly improved ability to use his height and jab. That element of his game is certainly there thanks to Roach. It's simply not the style he should adopt. Despite his height, the way he feels most comfortable is emulating his father's swarming style, and most of the time, it's better not to force aspects of a fighter's identity away from him. His inside game is much tighter, and he can box at range just fine, so I see no reason to leave Roach, as he seems to be getting enough attention.
Other than Margarito, Garcias fighters don't look defined (Rios, Donaire, Mikey Garcia, and recently Pavlik). I am not convinced by the work ethic and stamina training methods Garcia uses. Chavez is better off with Roach.
