First he needs to decide whether he wants to continually starve himself to make 154 or decide to make the right decision and move up in weight.

I'm not seeing world beater material in this kid.

But there are enough Mickey Mouse belts floating around; I'm sure, with his backing, he could angle his way towards a shot for some vacant strap in the next couple of years.

He's never gonna be anything special.

A title only means he has to face other tough fighters.

The best thing for him is to just fight more 4th tier fighters like Vanda and try to improve, and if he loses, well, he will always be taken care of anyways....

I give him next to zero chance right now against a top level or second level fighter at 154 and would say he would probably lose to the third tier as well.

If he tries to step it up he is going to get badly embarrassed. I think for him, it will be more honorable to simply reach his level and retire if he can't improve, bow out without getting hammered into the ground.

He prove he could at least contain Vanda for ten rounds, that is a long way away from fighting the best.

Seriously, the right move now would be to stay at that level. The kid is very young still and no amateur experience.

Yeah, a fight against Hearns would be a good test for him. He's clearly not ready for the top guys at this point. Arum knows no to put him in there with the top guys until 2010.

If he has no amateur experience, then IMO he is entitled to pad his record suitably.

But - quit talking about taking on Vernon Forrest. Beat the journeymen and gatekeepers first, having now conquered bums.

    Should fight Duddy.

    Both guys have good chins.

    Both guys have poor defences.

Both guys have decent if not life-changing power.

Both guys have huge fanbases (Chavez JR moreso but I'm sure he could reclaim some by taking on a fight like this)

It could be made at a CW between LMW and MW, which would probably favour both.

No belts, but a big fight nonetheless. Would mark a step up in class for Chavez and at least give him the chance to be the cuter operator. If he's going to try something new, it should be against someone limited but tough in Duddy, whom would give him a stern test doing it. I get the feeling he just isn't getting 'up' for the likes of Matt Vanda. He's probably spoiled and 'can't be bothered' with all this 'building up'.

Of course, that's a bad move on his part, I feel if he was brought on this way for a bit longer but got in shape more and was more disciplined, there's no reason why he can't become very good indeed. Shame he isn't disciplined enough to make 154, as it's a great division for him to start in. There's enough big names on their way out and younger guys who have weaknesses (Mora, no power for instance) and Chavez has some natural attributes, good chin, decent power.

However, his bad attributes (stamina, discipline, doesn't seem to want to learn anything new) will let him down at the moment.

He should train at Angulo/Margarito's gym if he wants to get in shape. However, I don't think he does, and have a sneaky suspicion that he will retire after his first loss, especially if he gets stopped. His heart just doesn't seem to be completely in it.

I.e he knows if he keeps fighting these decent if not legacy-defining fighters, he can do well enough. He can then stop before reaching the pinnacle. However, I feel if he had the drive and intent on success and learning he could make a very good fighter. He has the basics; goo chin, decent enough dig.

Nacho Beristein would be a good trainer for him. He'd get him running up in the mountains and that would help his stamina.

To all the guys saying Hearns, I think it would be a decent gauge for both of them.
