If the Champion agrees or choose to have a catchweight, that's his choice. As Champion, you decide on the terms of the bout. If the Champ wants to have a catchweight, that's how he's choosing to defend his title. If the catchweight doesn't benefit the champ, then the Champ shouldn't agree to a catchweight - simple. You're basically saying "if the champ agrees to a catchweight, the title automatically becomes vacant". That's obviously not how it works. The catchweight is inherently part of the terms of the title fight.

Prime Sergio was better looking than Ginger too.

I think it's pretty clear that Chavez was seriously affected by the weight drain and started the fight on empty. Canelo would probably have beaten him even at 168 but the fact is that Martinez faced a much better Chavez.

    Martinez > Canelo, agree.

    Martinez > Canelo, it's obvious.

Nah dude you're way off, prime and champion Sergio used to take MULTIPLE rounds completely off, usually consecutive rounds in the middle of the fight... He did so against Williams, Pavlik, Barker, and Murray.

Handicapping is just fine, man. I beat Usain Bolt in a footrace the other day. He made it close but I won by a yard. The sack of cement he was carrying had no effect on his performance imho. Damn I'm good.

I'll take an undefeated, younger, not weight -drained belt holder, than a walking dead weight-drained, loser mindset, only there to pick up a good check, nonpunch throwing Chavez. The Chavez that fought Martinez just beat Andy Lee. The other Chavez hasn't had a decent win in years and was stopped not too long ago....Which one is better?

Sergio has his fantastic wins over Williams and Pavlik. But beyond that Dzinziruk, Barker, Macklin... these guys aren't too special and Canelo certainly has fought guys who stack up to them.

Remove the Williams rematch and the Pavlik win and Canelo certainly has the better resume. Even including them, I think this is more of a debate than some people are letting on. Most importantly, though, we are trying to compare a 27 year old to a dude who just retired after a full career... If we are talking about who would win in a match between Sergio and Canelo, then that's a different conversation.

Yep - whether it's a fan arguing a fantasy match up or an actual bout at catch weight for me it is muddied.

100%, not even debatable, Chavez from years ago during his Zbik-Lee days is better than Chavez of today.

Just because you want someting hard enough dosen't make it true. You're obviously not a Canelo fan, so you've gone ahead and made up your own rules rules so that he isn't Lineal Champ. I mean this is pathetic lol. You and PIRA should create your own boxing school called "Imaginary ways to discredit Canelo" . . .

Regardless of your opinion, Canelo made Chavez look like a club fighter.
