if the fight was held today or in the next 3 months maybe chavez, but I think alvarez has more potential as a boxer, so in a year and a half I think alvarez could beat chavez, give the kid some time.
Why should he needs time before face Chavez Jr? You talk like Chavez Jr is the same level as Mosley, Martinez, Williams lol. Right now Alvarez will ko Chavez Jr.
It would be interesting to see this matchup right now, but we know it would'nt happen..... I'd actually favor Chavez Jr. at this point and mainly because I believe his chin is better than Alvarez'. Chavez Jr. has never been hurt to the point his legs are out from under him..... Alvarez was badly hurt by Jose Miguel Cotto who is not a big puncher. Chavez Jr. would have to use his height and reach and fight diciplined to be sure. Great matchup. I'd actually pay the 60 bucks PPV to watch this fight alone.
I would favour chavez jr atm, im not sure alvarez has the right tools right now. but i think saul has more chance to become a champ
Didn't even have to think on this one (not that I do that often anyways), "soulless" Saul Alvarez by mid to late KO. Was a big fan of JCC, but was never sold on his son.
:yikesWhat? I'm I reading it right? You've always hated and putdown Chavez Jr. in this forum. I want an explanation as to why you're choosing Chavez Jr.? Actually Kirk, I'd like to hear your thoughts on both fighters at the moment?
Cotto ko record speaks for itself lol. But it was just a good punch that landed but Alvarez bounce back from it and after that beat up Cotto badly. Atleat Alvarez hasn't been on some fights that were controversials like Chavez Jr has vs taxi drivers.
Hey there Divac.... Well in terms of H2H matchups, i try not to let myself get swayed by personal fondness or dislike of the fighters involved. (try.. lol) In this case, im just not sure i think Alvarez would be able to handle Jr at this point in time, not saying his potential at some later point in time wont eclipse Jr's, but im talking realistically, head to head, at 154lbs.... Im just not so sure that Alvarez will be able to handle the size and pressure that JR will bring to the ring.... I dont think Alvarez does anything quite enough that will trouble JR, i think that for the most part, JR will be able to walk in on Alvarez, and get some work done, and perhaps even bully him when he wants/needs to. I am confident that JR could take anything that Saul dishes, and im not sure of the reverse quite honestly. I think people are starting to hype up Alvarez based off his popularity, but i think if you put JR in there with Sauls last couple opponents, we would see similar domination. However, im not sold that Alvarez would even be able to take a trailhorse like Duddy at the moment. And while my opinion isnt based on how they would do against eachothers opponents, its just something im pointing out on how i think people are underselling JR a bit and playing down how he was able to thrash a big, hard hitting (while obviously severely limited) Duddy, in a fight that was seen as a step up fight and should be fairly closely contested, but then everyone completely celebrates Sauls destruction of a past it Baldomir, who was very much the sacraficial lamb. So opponents aside, i also think that JR matches up decently, as of right now (until i see a bit more from Saul) with Alvarez, i think he would have Saul trying to box off the back foot from the outset as i think Saul would find JR too big on the inside, and once JR gets Alvarez on the backfoot, i see him dictating the fight, and making him more and more uncomfortable as the fight wears on. Like i said, this can change if i see Saul improve and if i think JR starts to regress from the performence he put on against duddy (oftentimes when having a very limited and hittable opponent like duddy in front of you it makes you look all the better, we will see how he continues to look under roach and ariza as he steps up the comp) but as of now its just how i see the fight going. As for how i think of them as fighters. Well man, i really like Saul, as a young, up and coming fighter, i like everything he brings to the table.... i think most boxing fans would. I will continue to root for him, and one would think it would be hard for him NOT to continue and improve as he gains more world class training camps, his body matures, and he hopefully, continues to learn. As for JR, i had no love for him in the past because i saw a kid who i felt was being handed everything, who got a gift decision in one of his earlier fights (imo), rumors of tampering with scales, and him fighting much smaller guys and i was honestly so un impressed with everything he would show in the ring that all in all i simply didnt like the guy. But i think he started winning me over after he was involved in a few give and take fights against true men, and then seeing his dedication to get with world class, and serious people like team roach, while he could be partying and living off his name, getting fat and disrespectful like Camacho JR, i had to kinda take notice of that you know? Then, after going through a battle like the one he had with duddy, where he proved some toughness there and some grit, and some developing, underlying skill (imo), and nobody giving him any chance or any credit, idk... just kinda makes me ease off him a bit. anyways, just my take on it..... again, ive got more to watch on saul, and i hope both these guys continue to improve and have success. :good
Kirk normally you talk sense. But what on earth do you see in Chavez that makes you think he can beat Alvarez?
Exellent post! I'm happy to see that you've come around on Chavez and are giving him a chance to show what he can mount up too. I get what you're saying why you were'nt taking to Chavez........Normally I dont take to fighters that are fed with a silver spoon. Chavez was a little different for me however. I will forever be fond of his dad Chavez Sr. and that has something to do with it. ......but aside from that, Jr. I've found is a kid that respects others. A kid that has actually learned from the mistakes he saw his dad make outside of the ring. .......and a kid that does not badmouth other fighters. ....the fact that he hooked up with Roach as you said shows that he knows he has alot more to learn, and that he needed to hook up with a good trainer who was'nt going to take any crap from him and would not let him lax in training camp. As I said earlier, I think Chavez beats Canelo now also, but one thing that I see in Canelo that may help him vs Chavez is that Canelo throws that heavy jab. That jab bothered a tough experienced Baldomir. Chavez with his size, used his jab more vs Duddy, but imo needs to work more on the snap of it. Imo with his size, he need to put it into practice more in training camp and attempt to make it one of his primary weapons. I can see Chavez being a legit dominant champion if he works on that jab. Chavez and Canelo, I'm rooting for both of them....... ......and can you imagine if they're both winning and champions in about 3 years time???? .....I'm getting way ahead of myself I know.....but what a fight and a matchup that would be for boxing and all of Mexico.
