Put aside you fandom for Chavez and Martinez and let's look at what is truely best for the MW division. Martinez has been hiding behind his lineal claim without actually defending his status as the #1 MW by fighting the best MW's out there. Chavez is likely moving up to 168lbs after this fight and if he beats Martinez would erase Sergio's fradulent claim as being considered the #1 MW without proving it. Ken Hershman and HBO has expressed interest in having a four man, single elimination MW tournament and mentioned Golovkin, Pirog, Geale, Martinez. If Sergio loses to Chavez and wanted to continue fighting this would be the quickest way to reestablish himself as #1 as it would only require two fights in less than a year but most important it would be against the best MW's. We all know if Sergio beats Chavez he'll continue dreaming about a Pacquiao or Mayweather bout while fighting lesser MW contenders like Barker and hide behind his lineal claim while refusing to give the best MW's a chance. It's a great time for this to happen since 160 is filled with so much talent right now and it's the only way we'll see Sergio fight the best. Edit - The poll question should say "Do you agree JCC winning is best for the Middleweight division"
If, Chavez wins & moves up, & that tournament is held then I'd agree with you. I dont know why you dislike Martinez so much, he's a great fighter & an all round good guy. Not to mention he's beaten much better competition than anyone else in the division.
The love Sergio gets P4P wise astounds me given his shallow resume and recent competition. Decent guy, good fighter. Not p4p no 3
Agree with Shaun that he's not #3 and it's only the dearth of genuine top level talent and competition that lifts Sergio to his lofty position. But he will stop Jnr in the Championship rounds. My guess is the 12th.
I like Martinez so I want him to win. A fight with Golovkin or Pirog is likley somewhat far away either way. Unfortunately. Geale maybe isn't so far away, and if Quillin wins that one might be made, too. I didn't take the poll.
If Sergio beats Chavez, he'll drop to 154 and use his enhanced popularity to get fights with Cotto, Alvarez, and maybe Mayweather. Way more money in those fights than with Golovkin, Pirog, Quillin/N'Jikam and Geale. I still think Martinez-Chavez will end up with a rematch at 165 or so.
Given the fact that Junior is about to move up, there's no way it's better for the MW's if he won. The title would be vacant ffs.
I think the emphasis is on getting Sergio to accept fights with the other top MW's. Chavez would avoid those guys even if he stayed at MW. As for the title, the WBC has banned all unifications, so it's best for boxing if it stays vacant.
Martinez fought elite competition at MW and will continue to do so, Chavez Jr. was carefully managed and will continue to be so, so no, Jr.'s winning would be bad for the division.
If Martinez wins and fails to mention Golovkin's name in the post-fight interview with Kellerman, how long will it take Vysotsky to start a thread accusing him of ducking? Five seconds?
chavez jr winning is good for the cruiser weight division... martinez im sure will fight golovkin and other big names after he disposes of chavez
If Sergio wins the title will also be vacant. He won't give the top MW's a shot and the lineage will die anyways after he fights a couple JMW's and retires.
