Chavez (of the Rosario fight) or Hopkins (of the Trinidad fight) - who was better?

At their absolute peak, who was the better, more impressive, more effective and greater fighter at their own weight:

    JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ

    or

    BERNARD HOPKINS?

Please, no fanboy nonsense, let's stick to the topic and have a serious discussion, two undoubtedly great fighters we have here.

    Please vote and comment. :bbb

I voted for Chavez. Head to head great offence will trump great defence unless it is athletic defence, I think that Chavez's ability to thread a full-blooded punch through the eye of a needle trumps Hopkins spooky control over range and tempo.

I voted for Chavez who imo is a very underrated fighter. He was an absolute monster and had this thing about his punches where he could get extension on his powershots and land them in places where you would think "how the **** did that get there?" and add to that his chin, stamina, pressure, and ability to cut off the ring. the guy is incredible

Hopkins is a legend but JCC is a step above.

Interesting comment. Does the Meldrick Taylor fight come into your thinking when answering this question, or do you feel that was a one-off stylistic mismatch for JCC? (I suppose he did win anyway, but it was a very hard night for a near-peak Chavez I'm sure you'll agree) Also, do you think the more aggressive B-Hop circa the Johnson fight of '97 was as good as the current Pavlik-slaying '08 version? A little off-topic, but still relevant in a way.

I only recently saw the Rosario fight in full for the first time (well, a couple of months ago now it was), and I was pretty taken aback at just how good Chavez was in that fight. You're talking seriously approaching offensive perfection on that night!

Well I wasn't thinkin of Taylor given the framing of the question.

I think that Hopkins Taylor/Pavlik, there isn't much between them for pure quality, but Hopkins mark II is the more vulnerable stylisticly, obviously. So head to head here, I'd rather have the Johnson version.

I got a horrible feeling that absolute peak Hopkins was Taylor I at 168/175, and we missed out on him.

Chavez for me.. The level of opposition in the years from the first Maywether to the Whitaker fight is something BHOP could only dream about. I respect Hopkins and all as much as Im not particularly thrilled with his style. But Chavez I think was just a notch better p4p wise.

Chavez hands down. Never did he resort to stinking out a joint by hugging and fouling. He was a fighter's fighter. Wasn't a showboat, a loudmouth, or a racist *****. Came to win a fight, unlike Hopkins who fought not to lose instead of to win. I still remember his words, "I don't care what the fans think." As great as Chavez was, he may or may not have had an off-night against Taylor. We will never know. What I do know is that he won that fight in dramatic fashion. Chavez all the way.

I actually feel that version of Rosario was probably even a little better than that version of Tito.
Edwin was an excellent boxer-puncher in the first half of his career and lightweight was his home. His destruction of Bramble less than a year before was one his best wins.

In that respect I feel dominating Rosario is even a better achievement than dominating Tito (who was the smaller man against Hopkins)...In a H2H sense I mean, of course that will go down as Hopkins' signature fight and Tito will be rememebered the greater Rican.
But in response to the thread Ill go with Chavez over Rosario being the better H2H victory.

A bizarre answer to a question on their boxing abilities only.

check it. Find a clip of the 12th round Chavez vs Taylor and look at the bodyshot chavez lands with his left with 22 seconds left in the round. Its unbelievable that in the 12th round of a grueling fight someone can land such a crisp and accurate bodyshot.

Thats just 1 example. He does **** like that all the time. And he is also an underrated counterpuncher.

Same argument stands, though, for the block and shot Hopkins drops in the last round of the Tito fight.

Will do. Philla, had Chavez fought Whitaker around '88 or '89, how do you think that fight would've went?
