Taylor was still fast. That's something that didn't go away even as everything else did. He wasn't as fast as before, but a slowed-down Taylor is like a slowed-down RJJ or Ali with their hands, still very fast. Even in the rematch in 1994, Taylor showed fast hands. The thing is, Taylor's reflexes, punch resistance, legs, accuracy, etc...all weren't the same. The thing with Chavez is that he was a very good ring-cutter with intelligent pressure. It's hard to just use your speed and be on the move and outbox him. You got to stand your ground. Taylor was winning mainly because of his workrate and handspeed, but that came when he was mostly in the pocket, and the damage built up.
Chavez would have hurt him real bad. The first fight is the main reason that he cant speak clearly anymore. I have watched that fight and feel that the fight should have been ended earlier. That fight had it been set at 15 rounds....would have ended with the death of Melderick. It was a great fight both fighters gave all they could. You could see how Taylor's blows did nothing to Chavez.
Perhaps! I just never thought McGirt was a full throttle for that fight. There are numerous accounts of ear problems and such, and while I can't prove their authenticity, I can watch the footage. McGirt looked good for the 1st rd and part of the 2nd...some of that is a credit to Taylor, but he is clearly not the same fighter from the 3rd and on! In light of that I have always found his performance against Davis his best!
