Don't know if this has been posted but I haven't seen it before. Didn't had a clue Chavez trained at the Kronk. This content is protected
Yes, Manny was extremely impressed with his boxing ability, intelligence and defense. Even knowing his record, and the fact that he was on the back end of his career, Manny was surprised by what he saw.
Steward also worked with Chavez in a few fights including the second fight with Meldrick Taylor. This content is protected
Emanuel Steward had nothing but praise for Chavez's skills. Certainly a match made in heaven between a great fighter and trainer. “Chavez never really had a real trainer, and I was amazed by this. He was basically a self-trained fighter.”
I think it’s possible of all the fighters Manny worked with JCC might’ve been the best? Just off the top of my head. Manny is mistaken about Chavez being a “self trained fighter” he absolutely had a trainer and from his third fight only one man really educated JCC Snr and it was Romulo Quiarte - he’s as unsung as a great trainer can be.
I’ve read Manny and others take credit for training JCC Snr at different times stuff like that has never sat well with me… if Toney wasn’t such a flag bearer for his coach who knows who’d have taken the credit for him? I just found this ring interview with JCC’s only real trainer it’s good to see he’s finally getting a mention somewhere, you can learn quite a lot about Mr Quirarte by reading the late @demspey1234 posts.
