I was just reading through some of JCC's fights on chavez360.com and after the fight with Haugen, it says Chavez earned 2.5 mil as well as 10 mil deal to fight Norris.

How realistic was this fight? Was Chavez going to skip WW and move up 2 classes for the LMW title or was Norris going to come down at meet him in the middle at welter? Anyone know how close this fight was to happening or what the hold up was?

I can't believe I posted this in general by accident..oh well!

We've been through this before............. Chavez was way too small for Terry Norris in 1993 and above....... Norris had a glass-jaw, but not shaky enough for the smaller Chavez to dent / break it at 147 + pounds........... Chavez was NOTHING special above 140 pounds........... Chavez was special between 130 to 140 pounds--MAX!! Norris KO's Chavez in wicked fashion at welterweight / Jr. Middleweight...... Chavez knew that too........ 'Tis why the fight never happened............

I really wasn't interested in a hypothetical outcome, and also believe Norris was too big and it's not a good match-up. I am more curious as to how acurate the report was in regards to the potential 10 mil deal and what stopped it.

That fight was being hyped by Don King........... Norris and Chavez even took some photos' for the press................. But Chavez eventually woke-up and took a sip of some coffee and walked away...... Good move.... Norris was gonna kill Chavez in 1993 / '94.......

Norris was KO'd in 1993 by Simon Brown down in Mexico, but even Brown was too big and good for Chavez at 147 to 154 pounds in 1993......... Chavez had NO CHANCE in beating either "Norris or Brown" at that juncture.........

Thanks, that is what I was looking for! Shame for Terry seeing how the first brown fight went, as I don't believe Chavez could pull this out either, and imagine he wouldn't fare a whole lot better than Meldrick (although I am not comparing their styles in the least!)

Id give Chavez a shot at 147 against Simon Brown. About Even money if you ask me. I agree that Norris would have beat him though.

I'll only agree at 147 cuz Brown was struggling by 1992 to make 147.... After all, Brown was beaten by McGirt in late 1991 at 147 and lost his WBC title in the process............ BUT! At 154, Brown KILLS Chavez in 1993---circa........

Not exactly a fair comparison:patsch How about Manny and Kelly Pavlik?

You know what though i think Chavez chin was so good in his prime that it was probably good enough to hold up under a good puncher at JM.
Not a Hearns,Jackson type but probably good enough to take Browns shots. What would have done Chavez against Norris would have been the Combo of SPeed and Power. Chavez wouldnt be a good puncherat JM maybe average at best.

Naw........... Chavez NEVER proved to be world class at anything above 140 pounds........... Chavez never won a worthy fight above 140 pounds...... At 147, Chavez was average / ordinary.......... Simon Brown falls short of true greatness, however, he was damn good from 1988 to 1993......... Brown beats Chavez' ass at 147 to 154 pounds in 1992 or '93 when Chavez was fishing in deep waters........ Brown really didn't fall apart until Vinnie Petteway KO'd his ass on Showtime in 1995 in a wild affair........ Brown was winning until he got caught with a hook by Petteway in round 5 or so and fell onto his back jabbing into the night's air..... WICKED!

I think he would have fared better than Meldrick. He had a more consistent style than Meldrick. Meldrick was fast but that would never work against a taller bigger Norris, but Chavez moved forward more and forced fights and yeah Norris had the power, but Chavez would have had a punchers chance in this fight. Not as ridiculous as it seemed.

Hard to say for sure, but discussions were ongoing for some time and did seem to get serious at certain points.

I remember Norris saying at one point that he was willing to come down to welter.

Chavez's fight with Whitaker took some of the luster off the proposed match, but the real nail in the coffin was Norris getting KO'd by Brown. Both fighters were showcased on the same card, and there was still some talk (though I don't know how genuine at this point) that the fight could happen next, but Norris' loss tossed any prospect of it out the window.

I don't even think Norris would be hurt dropping down to WW against Chavez:

At 147 Chavez would have enough power to ko Norris. Not that Chavez would have been a big puncher at 147 but Norris would have to respect his power or he would be in for a big surprise.

Another thing even a past it Chavez gave a decent fight to a prime Oscar at 147.

A prime Chavez would still have enough to be a very good Welter(but not great) even though this was not his natural weight. Norris would not have been able to just go thru Chavez like he did Taylor. If he did he could find himself in trouble. Norris would have to use his blistering speed at first and then later settle down on his punches. Even though he is the bigger and stronger man hear,he better not think hes gonna just blow him out.

TO Mr Bill Brown would not KILL a Prime Chavez. Like i said earlier matching him up with World class JMS is not a fair statement. Even if Brown was much bigger naturaly Chavez is still the much better fighter and unless you are elite you dont blow a prime Chavez out even if you are naturally much bigger.

NOPE! Chavez at 147 had cheesy power......... Chavez never proved he could fight / box a serious mother at 147.......... He was so normal above 140 pounds............

Terry Norris was strong as an Ox against Mel Taylor at a catch-weight fight in 1992 on HBO...... Norris at 149 made Taylor look like a dick on HBO...... BLOW OUT!!!!

I sense Norris could make 147 and beat the **** outta Chavez as a welter in 1992 / '93....

ODLH gave his props to Chavez, and i dont think he was patronizing him. He also said he felt Chavezs power and this was when he was past it and ODLH in his prime.

Also i never said hed beat Norris but Norris would be best off not taking the advice of someone like you LOL! Who thinks that Chavez wouldnt be able to hurt him. A past it Chavez yey he gets badly whupped by Norris. A prime or near prime Chavez holds his own with Norris even though this was not his weight. I think he would do better than what Marquez did against Mayweather.
