I've just rewatched this fight again and was again amazed at what a complete and utter dominance and what a technically masterful display it was.

Chapo was in some good form coming in after arguably being robbed against Camacho and then destroying Livingstone Bramble for the Lightweight title and was at that time a consensus choice as one of boxings best p4p punchers and a fine boxer in his own right.

Julio Cesar Chavez was coming up in weight when he delivered this near flawless display of attacking boxing and technical excellence.

For a fight where Rosario spent huge portions with his back to the ropes with Chavez stuck to his chest but otherwise within punching range Chapo landed no punches of any consequence. The reason being was the absolutely superb inside defense of Chavez. His ability to roll with and slip punches in close was some of the best I've seen plus his gloves were always perfectly positioned to parry whatever shots he didn't feel like slipping.

Chavez' punching technique in this fight is also some of the best ever seen imo. He barely wasted a single shot all fight and his punches were crisp, deadly accurate and text book. His body attack was incredible and the thudding sound his left rips to the liver and ribs made was painful to listen to.

Rosario showed plenty of guts but he was emasculated by the best version of one of the best fighters I've ever seen. Chavez didn't make a single error that Rosario could take advantage of and suffered one of the most one sided beatings a top line fighter could ever take.

People might mention the Taylor or Camacho or even the Mayweather fights but Chavez was never better than he was this night and very few fighters have ever matched it.

When you talk of virtuoso displays people often mention Floyd-Corrales, Jones-Toney, Ali-Williams or Duran-De Jesus III but in my humble opinion Chavez' display against a prime great in Rosario is better than any of them.

    Agree or not?

Here it is for those who've yet to see it or those that need a reminder of its quality.

It's masterful. Takes a couple of punches too many in comparison with some of histories greatest displays but that nit-pick aside it's a master class.

Its a great example of solid, technically correct pressure dismantling a very good Boxer-Puncher. Probably one of the best, if not the best, display of this pressuring style. I know McGrain is big on 'efficiency' when applying pressure, and JCC sure is ruthlessly efficient

A masterclass and probably Chavez' greatest performance. I watched it at the time in awe!

Arguably the best one sided fight in history. That night JCC would of given any 135lber in history an amazing battle.

Griffo, the only thing I disagree with you on is Rosario's punches. I think Rosario got off plenty of beautiful counter-punches square on the chin of Chavez. Rosario was one of the best one punch bangers in the business but...Chavez took them all. It was a virtuso performance. Every so often I rewatch this fight just to let myself remember why I love boxing.

A superb and patient demolition. Chavez was never better and yes it is often overlooked for reasons i'm not quite sure I understand.

When I think of a dominating, masterful performance against a very good fighter, it's the first one that comes to mind. Spinks-Qawi is pretty high on my list of great displays, but it's not even close to the same level of domination/dismantling.

In my time, I think of Chavez vs. Rosario and Starling vs. Honeyghan as great displays of truly dominating performances at the highest level.

maybe because of how rosario closed his career, his stock fell quite a bit and this performance by chavez along with it. i don't agree: rosario was quality stuff but this performance ruined him

He still had a title win in him though. This isn't Pipino Cuevas.

agreed. but he lost that mystique, even the camacho win was so disputed it wasn't counted against him. this was BRUTAL and his career never quite was the same...i think people (unfairly) re-evaluated rosario and if you undermine him, you undermine the win.
