Interesting. I don't think Chavez resume will age well and I guess this is exhibit A.

    Always impressed by that.

Chavez was a surgeon with a concrete chin.

It's practically flawless. I think I'd favor 3 Lightweights over peak Chavez, and he'd give them each a rough night. Brilliant, surgical, ruthless fighter at his best. A joy to watch.

i'm made the argument before, rosario is the only hall of fame win of chavez's career. his brilliance was in the performances and consistency but i feel it lacks top quality wins.

it's also unfair that he fought most of the hall of famers on his resume far past his prime and his best weight

past rosario he went 0-4 against surefire hall of famers, losing to whitaker, delahoya twice and tszyu. he was shot to **** against kosta and that fight means nothing. however, when looking at his best opponents on paper, he came up short. if you think camacho and ramirez may get into the hall, his overall record goes to 3-4 against the best.

his career was marked by a LONG run at the top, destroying top contenders and very good competition. it's a shame that when sharing the ring with IBHOF opponents, he was nowhere near his best.

Two world title wins after this Rosario had! Albeit against mediocre-ordinary fighters

Rosario was a very average fighter afterward though.Sort of like a poor man's post Honeyghan Curry.bad balance, big wide sloppy stance, not really good at anything complicated anymore other than still having a dangerous basic right hand and left hook.

I wouldn't say he was any better than the Cuevas that beat Prada and Hansen then lost to Stafford and Duran. After that though(maybe after Hwang)Pipino had nothing.

I'm always in two minds about Rosario, he looked a very good boxer-puncher as a young pro, but abandoned any pretence at a well-rounded style circa the Ramirez fights, certainly afterward.

He never really looked that impressive against any of the better fighters he fought as a boxer-puncher, all his best moments coming from his pure power, usually in between marching forward getting outboxed.

My thoughts going into this fight was Rosario being overhyped once again due to the Bramble bout and the many flaws he had shown over the past half-decade were being overlooked.I didn't expect it to be as one-sided as it was, as Edwin was still a fine dangerous fighter who demanded respect, but i was certain if Chavez could take his shots (and not turn out to be a Camacho\Bramble esque ***** which was highly unlikely) he would win clearly.

All in all though a great performance and still probably the best lightweight win since Duran vs Buchanan and Dejesus 2\3.Pea vs Nelson has a claim though, as Nelson looked fine at 135 imo and was a better fighter than Rosario.

He's going to get that sort of treatment and it will be a shame because while anyone can Park a few guys (see page 3 of the Fenech thread for details) it takes a real all time great to have that sort of consistency against top 10 opposition. Just as people bring up Duran being beaten by Benitez and Leonard in the can't beat movers debate and ignore that this guy also lost to Kirkland Lang and Robbie Simms (who were absolutely no better than Buchanan or even Fernandez), so will people say oh once Chavez stepped up against actually HOF he couldn't hack it ignoring that this Chavez also lost to Frankie Randall and Willy Wise.

fair post and that's what i mean. i wonder if the context of chavez's career will be taken into account 20, 30 or 40 years from now. the eastsideboxing forum of the future may have a thread calling him horribly overrated and look at how oscar and sweet pea embarassed him, not considering the circumstances or timing of the fights.

i feel chavez is being his fair due now on the forum, no longer overrated and not being underrated but acknowledged as the greatest mexican ever by most and one of the best p4p fighters of all time.

You onyl need to look about forums right now to see any fighter has his defenders and detractors and a whole lot of people commenting who really don't know enough, or have an agenda of some sort. That's just boxing and plenty of fighters go through periods of being relatively ignored or undervalued(and vice versa)

opinions on fighters ebb and flow, Chavez was a great fighter loved by many and will always have people ready to fight his corner i suspect.

I hear what you guys are saying about consistency against good fighters likely to be underestimated in years to come, compared to having a couple of big flashy wins against other greats. It's always been possible to go the other way though and how many fighters have we seen overrated because of a nice consistent paper record?

Just a part of evaluating boxers imo and with footage becoming more widely available we're in a better position than ever for potentially fair analysis, unlike previous decades when a lot of fighters were seen or fresh in the minds only of harcore fight recorders and traders.Hopefully that continues.

Absolutely. But perhaps better to be thought overrated than forgotten. I would rather have Jack Dempseys legacy than Barney Ross'.

I thought Rosario was made to order for the guy and a mismatch from when it was signed. That elbows out style of his was never ever going to work against an accurate puncher like Chavez. And I sure didn't think he was ever going to back up Julio and Edwin's game was not backing up. It was a terrific performance by 1 guy only that night and the other guy just got hit. But the fight itself consisted of one way traffic & pretty much on par with Camacho-Boza Edwards in the pitching and catching departments.

I honestly thought Rosario was going to knock his block off. He'd scored some terrifying knockouts and had unreal power in his money punch. Chavez fought a smart fight, crowding Chapo and smothering his punches.

    I walked away impressed.

Chavez's standing in the future will be ok.

Look at Eder Jofre, who doesn't have a resume stacked with HOF'ers. He still gets the respect he deserves for his longevity and undeniable skills.

And more importantly, anyone that watches Chavez's fights with the likes of Meldrick Taylor, Roger Mayweather, Rocky Lockridge, Juan Laporte etc. will know that these guys he was facing were not stiffs - whether they make it into the HOF or not.

Ricardo Lopez on the other hand, will not have that cushion when people watch his fights against the best opposition he faced.

I taped the fight live back in '87 off HBO and Chavez was the underdog going in.... The consensus was, Rosario by KO..... Well, Chavez proceded to beat the **** outta Rosario via 11th round TKO.....
