I see that Whitaker gets alot more love on this forum than JCC but I believe their all time rankings ( despite their fight ) are very close.

    Whats your take on this?

Whitaker, no bias needed to make that evaluation.

More successful at higher weights, more success against better competition in general, never throughly outclassed during his prime, how each fared against a mutual opponent in De La Hoya....

Factor in their one sided actual match up against one another and how Chavez stuck around for too long even more so then Whitaker and picked up several unnecessary ass kicking and losses...

You could argue that Whitakers skill based style allowed him to travel up and down the weights more easily, and that the fact that the match up between them was at welterweight was a smart tactic on behalf of whitaker to curb Chavez's physical advantages.

Chavez was never thoroughly outclassed during his prime. His prime ended with Camacho, or before that.

Sticking around for unnecessary ass kicking does not lower your all time ranking. I think its fair to say that Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali stuck around too long and took some woopings. Does that make a difference to their standing?

Pea, because the whole purpose of their fight was to answer that question.

I always have trouble splitting these 2, there is no wrong answer, I wish you included a `too close to call` poll.

Why do you think it's so close, Bill? We saw what happened when they fought.

That match up should have happened three years before. At lightweight or light welter, having the fight then and at welterweight defeated the whole point of seeing who was the best.

    Chavez was worn by then.

hindsight :good. The greg haugens of this world werent going to show that Chavez had faded from his peak whilst they stood there and were hammered into submission.
