I just rewatched the Chavez-Taylor fight, and considering the fight was stopped at 5 seconds left with a busted up, hurt Taylor and after having seen what Mosley did to Mayorga with 2 seconds, there should not be any doubt in anyones mind that Richard Steele made the right call. With 2-5 seconds left, Chavez could have literary killed Taylor with one more punch.
I don't see how you can gauge how close (or far) Taylor was to dying. He took a bad beating, sure, but lots of guys take bad beatings and aren't close to death. It's not as if this fight alone turned Taylor into the slurring brain-damaged guy he became.
The official time the fight was stopped was 2:58 of the 12th round. People argue that Chavez would not have landed another punch. I think Steele made the right call because if you look closely, Taylor was still holding on to the ropes after the ten count was done. A round is over in 3:00 minutes not 2:58!
Steele was following the rules as Taylor barely answered him (he sort of nodded but no verbal response), although you can argue that Steele should have ordered Chavez to go back to the neutral corner since he wasn't there during the KD. I can see the argument either way on this controversy. I blame Duva a lot for this loss. Duva was up on the ring apron, and I believe that Taylor was distracted and looking at Duva's instructions, when Steele asked him if he was okay.
I suggest you actually get a hold of a good copy of the fight and watch for yourself......the first thing the video clip in this thread shows is Ledermans's card or 9 rounds to zero for Meldrick Taylor...a complete joke of a card!!!!! ......there were so many fans who wrote HBO and belittled them about their embarassing bias, that Jim Lampley confessed later on that he had rewatched the fight, and saw a much more competitive and closer fight than what his crew had called......I believe the words from Lampley were something to the effect that they were out of touch with Chavez' heavier and more damaging work on the inside, and focused too much on Taylor's flashier combinations. Take a look at this fight from beggining to end people....and pay close attention to Chavez' waist and headmovement throughout the fight, riding and evading shots, and picking quite a few off with his parrying......Chavez always had his hands moving on the inside, and what did'nt seem like big shots landing from Chavez, were actually heavy shots consistently landing clean on Taylor body and head that were causing great bodily harm. Turn the sound off while you're re-watching it too, you dont need the sound...... that whole broadcast team that night was a complete joke anyways.
I think I had Taylor up 8-3, with Chavez 10-8 in the final round due to the KD and Richard Steele DEFINITELY making the right call. Taylor was gone.
I don't know about that. He was getting hit more, yes, but it was Chavez who was handing Taylor his ass. Chavez never looked hurt in that fight.
Taylor was gone with that KO. They interviewed him later and he didnt remember what happened to him. He said Richard Steele didnt ask him anything and just stopped the fight. We all saw that Steele did ask him if he was alright. Taylor didnt remember. He didnt let go of the ropes after his 10 count was done. It was a good call by Steele.:deal :bbb :hat
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EtjqS7zl7Z0 agree with this guy on the nodding of the head. :yep he did respond physically. just not verbally cos he was distracted. atsch
Nah, you've got it wrong. Listen to Steele's post-fight explanation and you'll see the stoppage was just.
WHAT??????? Taylor had the fight in the bag...the stoppage could have went either way...duva is a ****ing dope for distracting his fighter but meldrick deserved to win that fight
the joke is thinking that taylor was not winning the fight...he was oobviously getting hit more than people thought but he was winning rds clear as day...round after round
