I always wondered if Mexican fans appreciated that near comeback more than Alvarez posing vs Floyd and lacking any urgency

It's not unusual for a fighter to soak more punishment than his oponnent and still win the decision.

Fernando Vargas fought through the pain to oupoint Quartey, but received the more damaging blows ( and still outworked Ike).

Boxing is scored by rds, not by endured physical harm.

Wait a minute! Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, Ray Leonard and Harold Lederman all say Meldrick Taylor was dominating.
If they say it, that should be good enough for anyone!!!! :!:

Please! The type of damage inflicted on Taylor was not only visually external. That looked bad enough, but the medical experts that ran Taylor through tests, said that Taylor's condition was the worst they had seen by a fighter that was brought to their hospital concious.

Thats not the condition of a fighter who did the dominating.

The one thing people need to do when they watch this fight is to turn the sound off and take the blinders off.

Jim Lampley is a Maestro at painting a picture or a happening through words. When you have that along with the speed and flash of Meldrick Taylor, its the makings of a GRAND ILLUSION.

The uneducated viewer bought into the illusion while Julio Cesar Chavez was hammering Meldrick Taylor with brutal shots inbetween and in the midst of his flashy flurries.

Proffesional boxing is about "effective aggression"!

You cant get much more effective than what Julio Cesar Chavez was on that night.
Julio Cesar Chavez took a Jackhammer to the house and systematically hammered away at it to bring it down!

    Substance over flash!
    Reality over illusion!
Julio Cesar Chavez over Meldrick Taylor! :deal

    I actually agree with that.
The scoring should have been closer prior to the stoppage.

But it simply does change nothing to it's corrupt nature.

Never understood points of view such as yours.
People against the stoppage nitpick at every detail of Richard Steele's action during his counting out of Meldrick Taylor.
I mean just plain out nitpicking.

.......if that was'nt enough, after Steele waves it off, what does someone like yourself say when Meldrick Taylor is left there at the corner still holding on to the ring ropes while he's argueing against the stoppage.
Watch the video. Taylor is argueing, yet holding on to the ring ropes to keep from falling.

A fighter under any condition to continue would have walked in chase of Steele to let him know he's just made a really bad mistake.
But no, Taylor just stands at the turnbuckle holding on to it for dear life.

Chavez holds records for most successful consecutive defenses of world titles (27), most title fights (37), most title-fight victories (31) and he is after Joe Louis (with 23) for most title defenses won by knockout (21).

Mayweather has 24 title fights (24 victories, 23 defenses).

you're comparing amateur standouts and Olympics medalists to someone who turned pro at 18 with no amateur record....

doesn't matter how many cab drivers chavez bet, after his first title, he was all business from there on with a few tune ups here and there....atleast he stayed busy, gave the fans what they wanted, and never fought no one after they were completely done......most on mayweathers record were way passed their good days......

Being an American i still find it laughable how, a quarter century later folks are still whining about Rich Steele:roll:, what a crock of BS...

Steele was screaming in his face ARE YOU ALRIGHT, ARE YOU ALRIGHT, and all Taylor could do was just stand there with this blank look on his face DUH, ANSWER THE REF!! BESIDES ITS NOT Rich Steele"s job to be the time keeper, he doesn't give a damn about how much time is left in the round, his main concern is the safety of the fighter...

Taylor swallowed alot of his own blood, ****ed blood for 2 weeks, spent time in the hospital after the fight, had his face busted up, and had a chance to make amends in the rematch but Chavez, knocked him senseless again:yep..

Chavez was clearly superior, listen to Chavez speak now he's clear as day, Taylors speech is so slurred it's not even coherent...

Taylor just didn't have Chavez"s chin, toughness, strength, or durability that was obvious..

people don't realize that chavez would've had about 6-8 seconds left......many laugh at that saying it's not enough....or maybe they haven't seen mayorga vs mosley :good

One of the judges had Chaves ahead btw and one of the others was going to score it 115-112 for Taylor so the fight was really close on the cards. I think it was one of those fights that the judges could've really judge better the impact of the punches compared to watching it on tv.
