Yeah, I have to agree. It's frustrating to read from simpleton fans that they think going forward means dumb defenseless caveman and going backwards means slick intelligent boxer. I've seen boxers on the back foot with horrible defense and excellent come forward fighters with great defense. Chavez was 87-0 when he fought Whitaker at a 145 lb catch-weight, in which he came in at 142. This is not unlike when Mayweather, 146, fought Marquez who also weighed in at 142.
Anyhow, I think it's harder to argue with real numbers, and when it comes to world champions, it's their championship record that matters most. Chavez was 31-4-2 (21 KOs) in world title fights. Whitaker was 19-3-1 (4 KO) in world title fights. Mayweather is 24-0 (10 KOs) in world title fights. Mayweather still has some catching up to do. Chavez has as nearly as many championship KO's as Mayweather has championship fights.
A good example of a fighter who fights on the backfoot with poor defense is Chris Algieri who just got dominated by Manny Pacquiao. Algieri who's supposed to be slick was gettting hammered by lead footed Provodnikov, it was no suprise that Pacquiao dominated him, although there were many who thought Algieri would give Pacquiao problems because he's stereotyped as a slick fighter who fights going backward. On that Whitaker fight, Chavez was asked prefight about his weight. Chavez said, " 142 lbs is as high as I could go and still be in peak physical shape" Chavez is from the old school and did'nt have a strenghth and conditioning coachng expert to help him put on lean muscle mass, much like Marquez with Nacho Beristain who as well for the Mayweather fight was in the same boat. All of Main Events fighters which Whitaker was part of had physical training and nutrition experts and that was an advantage he had over JC Chavez in making weight jumps.
Like he schooled Roger Mayweather'corpse, getting knocked down and labouring to a 12 rds decision, after both Chavez and Pendleton had demolished him 2 years prior ( 2 and 6 rds, respectively) ?
He gave Uncle Rog a pretty good toweling. I dont recall it being a laboured win at all. Mayweather wasn't exactly a spent force either, he had a pretty good run after that.
