Before Divac gets in here to give us his weekly 5 page essay on why the fight was a legitimate draw, allow me to give my take. Clean punching, ring generalship, effective aggression, and defense are official criteria for scoring fights. Is there anyone willing to argue that Chavez landed the cleaner punches? Anyone willing to argue he was the better ring general, considering his ineffective aggression which simply lead to a lot of missed punches and countering opportunities for Whitaker? Obviously I'd assume you aren't willing to assume Chavez's aggression was that effective, considering it played more into Whitaker's hands than his own. In fact, the most effective aggression of the fight came from Whitaker around the 7th and 8th rounds, when he cleanly outfought Chavez on the inside and actually had him backing up, as shown below: [YT]WcXtxaualiM[/YT] I'll assume nobody is actually daft enough to argue that Chavez had the better defense. Basing it on pretty much all criteria for judging, Whitaker handily won the fight. Most realize this and don't argue it, but for those of you who do, enlighten yourselves please. Or just re-watch the damn fight!
ok i pulled out my old scorebook (yes i'm that much of a nerd) and here's how i scored the fight: 1 10-9 chavez (close) 2 10-9 chavez 3 10-9 whitaker 4 10-9 whitaker (close) 5 10-9 chavez (close) 6 10-9 whitaker (close) 7 10-9 whitaker 8 10-9 whitaker 9 10-9 whitaker 10 10-9 whitaker 11 10-9 whitaker 12 10-9 chavez so i had it 116-112 whitaker
very close to what i scored and i watched it live. i dont feel the real julio showed up for that fight. its not out of the realm of possibility that after that many fights he finally had an off night. im not taking anything away from pea who fought a great fight but he just looked like a fighter who got old overnight.
To be fair, Chavez by that point was passing his prime in general. Pea was past his peak, but still in his prime IMO. The weight didn't really have anything to do with it though, as Chavez hardly weighed in any heavier than he would at JWW, and they were similarly small at the weight anyway. But Pea was at a better stage of his career than Chavez. I wouldn't say he got old overnight though, he was as good as he'd been in recent fights, just facing a much higher caliber of fighter. Prime for prime at LW it'd have been a closer fight likely, though I didn't have their actual fight particularly close at all so I'd still take Whitaker to win a close Decision. Styles make matchups.
chavez was my favorite fighter at the time but i had been a big fan of the sport way before chavez came around so as a boxing fan i had to admit that pea won that one, i just didnt see the movement and reactions i was used to seeing from julio. i think the chavez that beat rosario would beat a prime pea but i can respect someone who sees it otherwise. with fighters as good as these two you really cant guarantee a win either way.
That could be it, or it could be the fact that he never fought at Welterweight again and lost to Frankie Randall at JWW directly after. One of those two.
Agree! Are you going for some kind of record here? 3000 posts inside of a month would be a goal:think
