There's a great deal of confusion as to what a "check hook" really is.

 

If anyone actually watched the Mayweather-Hatton fight you would see that Emmanuel Steward uses the term just after it lands, I believe he says it was a text book check hook.
So as you see, it wasn't just something made up by Floyd.

At precisely 4:28 you will see a perfect example of a check left hook. It's more specific than catching a fighter with a left hook on the way in, as is the case with the Donaire-Vic fight.

It's catching a fighter and then pivoting out of the way so that they sail past you, as is shown here when Floyd check-hook's Hatton into the turnbuckle.

 

My trainer says it's when you throw a hook and the guy coming at you, and then you slide out. So Mayweather-Hatton fits perfectly, but others that are mentioned do not qualify under this description.

 

Why it needs it's own special classification is ridiculous. Mayweather simply caught Hatton lunging in with a left hook and he moved left to avoid Hatton. He was doing it a lot in the fight. When a fighter lunges or falls in behind his cross it is typical to slip to the outside and hook. Your body is in a natural position to throw that particular punch. Tyson would slip outside a right cross and left hook his opponents too. Classic move. Maybe at Kronk they call it a check hook but that counter has been taught for years. I have never heard it labeled a "check" hook till Steward said it on the broadcast. I didn't hear Floyd say that he caught Hatton coming in with a check hook. Whatever the case, I hope that after all this you finally found the info you have been searching for! LOL

 

Manny Steward calls it "a perfect check left hook" right after Mayweather lands it.

In the post-fight interview right after the KO, Mayweather says he caught Hatton with a "check hook" that he learned from the master trainers in Michigan.

If the term "check hook" doesn't exist, how come both Steward and Mayweather used it to describe the punch without speaking to each other?

 

Have looked at some post fight interviews on youtube but cannot find Floyd saying that. If you can post it. If he did then freaking fantastic! The "check hook" will be the most devastating new/old punch in boxing!

Actually not! The PBF hook was better because it was also a definition of how to use the check hook. He used the perfect punch at the perfect time. Jones just used it cause thats what he does.

i heard that as well it was in the post fight interview that Mayweather said it as i remember reading it in the newspaper
