Check hooks

Thank you for the proof, the reason why I was upset was that it seemed like people were gettin on Mayweather like he was being arrogant and invented a new term for a certain left hook. The term "check hook" has used for years in the midwest and Manny called it before Floyd did. It's a term used when a lunging fighter comes in and get's decked by a left hook.

 

Mayweather threw loads of them against Chico as well. It's a legitimate term.

 

I first heard the term in RJJ's post-fight interview after the Mccallum fight.

 

ive always thought of the check left hook as kind of a counter left hook thrown while moving/leaning backwards. RJJ threw it religiously in his fights, especially against southpaws.

The term has been used for years, i remember being taught as a young man by an old time trainer to throw a single shot whilst moving away from the opponent leaving the opposition bemused and disorientated.. Check Left hook is synonimous with the way a clever boxer should always throw single shots against a man coming in square on aggressively .. Hatton was tired and a prime candidate for that shot, Floyd knew that like Tuesday followed monday.........

 

In a little bit of a reversal, (since it' usually the boxer throwing it and the puncher walking into it) Chavez used one to knock down Taylor in their rematch.
