A lot of talent in that ring. Great to see prospects and champions in the same ring: it reminds how times cross each other. I have to say, I miss the old tradition of introductions. It was also a good way of giving something back to great champions and keeping their memory alive, which is the least we can do in return for their thousands of hours of pain and sweat.
Yeah, but look on the plus side, now we get rock bands and laser/firework displays and holograms from Germany ! I dont know when, but sometime boxing as I knew it died. :dead (and I'm not blaming Germany, the change came before that)
Great '77-vintage suits and hairstyles too. Howard Davis in his 3-piece suit and the side parted semi-afro. Cool. :yep Cooney looking like a giant nuclear mutation of an Osmond.
It seems to demean the whole event in some way now, boxings a deadly bizzness & now it's seems they need to make it a circus event, this is proberbly down to the fact that boxing is no longer on TV for the masses & mostly PPv. Back then you had a fight crowd that new what it was watching as with today you have what i'd call boxing tourists. I see this at the MGM now in Vegas where half the punters hav'nt a clue who is who & have proberbly been compt'd a ticket as part of a weekend getaway. I really miss the late great "CHUCK HALL" his ring announcement at Caesars Palace for the hagler/hearns fight still makes the hairs on my arms stand up. It all started with the "Lets get ready to rumble" Michael Buffer i'd say.
in Montreal they still do ring introductions. The promoter brings out all his champions and contenders.
