Check out the boxing record of Tommy Robson, 1920's middleweight who gave Greb some hard fights, very strange.
a specialist in beating fighters named after better fighters, italian joe gans is my favorite fighter for a day
Grin! He beat Delaney, Downey, Chip, Mike Gibbons and Ratner-the best men he faced, bar Greb-and lost to damn near everybody else. He also gave Greb, if not hell, then some of his hardest fights.
Delaney was young but Gibbons wasnt, he beat Bryan Downey too. He also beat Ted Kid Lewis seems to have been a puncher ,had Lewis down and Greb would have gone down but for the ropes, then loses to nobodies. As you say very strange.:huh
it's fighter like him that prove just how capable many of these fighters really were. so we don't know much about them, it does'nt mean they were'nt good. you'll often here greats mention less known names among their hardest or greatest opponents/fights! boxing is littered with great, excellent and very good fighters with little between them, especially in busy bygone days, to think not is pure foolishness imho.
Yeah, know what you mean. Sometimes you boxrec a fighter like Robson and get a surprise which can continue if you then boxrec some of the little-known guys that beat him.
Kind of reminds me of Bryan Downey. He defeated six future or former champions. Matt Wells, Jack Britton, Mike ODowd, Jack Delaney, Johnny Wilson (this needs to be changed in the record books), and George Chip. His beat the his victory over Delaney was a one sided beating. He almost knocked Delaney out. Delaney had just entered the big time with an upset knockout over Rickards new favorite Paul Berlenbach. It was Downey's only win in 7 fights between mid 1923 and late 1924.
