Just wanted to say thanks to all you lads. For the first couple of months on ESB I generally hung about on the General and British forums, were there appeared to be a lot of uneducated ranting and slagging off of people's mothers etc. (some really knowledgeable types as well; guys who are clued up about the modern game, but a lot of garbage as well). However, I have been coming on here the last few weeks (posting a bit, but mostly just reading other people's stuff) and it has been a refreshing change; most people seem to know there stuff really well, and tend to display a vast wealth of boxing knowledge. In addition there does not appear to be a large amount of mud-slinging goin on, which is good). In short, thanks for all the coherent and insightful info that you regular writers have all posted, which has helped me improve my own knowledge of the game. Glen McCrory once told me that he had never seen anyone who knew so much about the game as I did, but I realise now that I don't know as much as I thought I did (especially in regard to the fighters of yesteryear). It has been a humbling, but constructive, experience. If anyone could recommend any good books in relation to the pre-WW2 boxing game/boxers I would really appreciate it (my knowledge of figures such as Burley, Langford and Charles is sadly lacking). Once again, thank you:good
Welcome, you are now officially an ESB Classic convert! By the way, Charley Burley, the life and hard times of an uncrowned champion, is an absolutely brilliant read, you'd like that one. I have many books, that compile information on boxing's greatest fightest fighters over the years. I read them all though before i came to ESB. I think that you can maybe learn more here than by reading all the books you can get, but i do think its better to read the books first, get your bearings on boxing history, and then come to ESB and really get the best insights and opinions. That's what happened with me anyhow, and i think my knowledge of boxing has really benefited from it.
It's great to hear Classic get such a favourable report. Welcome and feel free to join in the banter. :good
:thumbsup I actually spend more time in classic than in general these days for the reasons just mentioned. I also enjoy discussing the legends who shaped this great sport, guys that are easily forgotten on the general forum + you can never know enough & there are knowledgable posters in ESB land tho as I said... they mostly post in classic. :good
Welcome! --and please don't hesitate to speak freely and offer up your own theories or arguments out here.
Just back from a few hours work and sleep. Thanx to McGrain (thought it would suit this forum well) Thanx to Bill Butcher (I know what you mean; I will still bump back and forward between the General, British and Classic, but think I will spend a lot more time on here than the other two) Thanx Stonehands89 (Will endeavour to hold my own in such exchanges as I do partake) Thanx la-califa ("thinking Man's forum" - too true; its best to know your stuff and think before you type on here.)
Greetings ... Clay Moyle recently published a very interesting book on Sam Langford called "Sam Langford, Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion" . You can find it on amazon and it is very informative.
Cheers he grant; really have to polish up on Langford, seeing as I didn't have him placed in my all-time top-10 while a lot of guys had him 1st. Thanx for the recommendation.
it's good to have you on board d-mac.there's a book came out recently by adam pollack who posts on here called "in the ring with bob fitzsimmons" and it's a truly fascinating read,i would recommend it to anyone.
