Interesting. Wouldn't surprise me if King pulled something like that. :good

Still, had the public not bought that Spinks was a cherry pick, there's no way the odds would've been that wide in the first place.

I can see where you're coming from in that Holmes may never have had the chance to win on the cards if there was a conspiracy, but I don't think Spinks was ever expected to win cleanly (even by King). Could've been a case where there were shenanigans in place that didn't end up being necessary.

I feel like every current Argentine fighter started off as a cherry pick. Maidana for Ortiz, Matthysse for Judah, and even though it is laughable to think now, Martinez for Cintron.

Who are "they?" While whites are dominant in virtually every aspect of american business, I don't think that held true in boxing. When I think of the dominant power brokers in boxing at the time, I think of King, Suliaman, and Arum. I don't think any of them had any particular interest in preserving Marciano's legacy. Not the Jewish guy, not the Mexican, and certainly not the black guy.

If anything, there would have been more financial interest in having Holmes break the record and becoming the "modern day Marciano". Anything to make Holmes a bigger box office attraction and improve the cuts the power brokers were making off of his fights.

Because of that, I'm more inclined to think Spinks was a cherry pick than someone sent in to "save" Marciano. But really, I just think he was the best available fight to be made in a pretty thinned out division.
