This thought kinda started at a earlier Berto thread where somebody said he got KD'd all over in the amateurs and is a KO waiting to happen in the pro's For some reason that got me thinking if there has ever been a case where somebody's chin has drasticly improved when moving to the Pro's ? For example i know David Tua has been KD'd by Felix Savon (no shame in that) and went on to be a iron chinned fighter that seemed to be impossible to get down (no the after the bell shot from Rahman does not count for me) But Tua seemed pretty solid already back then ... i wonder if there was a fighter that went down several or even numerous times as a amateur and turned out to be a pretty solid pro? (not granite chinned perse).
Cotto seemed to get a better chin when he moved up in weight. He has taken pretty big shots at 147 and taken them well. At 140 his chin was more questionable.
Rivera switched south paw and caught him with an uppercut that he never saw. With the exception of Margarito and PTP, any other welter probably would have went down from that punch. Berto showed no ill effects after the punch and went on to dominating the fight as he was before the knockdown. I'm tired on people using this as supporting evidence that Berto has a suspect chin. He may in fact have one however it has yet to really been proven in his professional career. :deal
Tua was basically a kid when he fought Savon but your question is an interesting one nonetheless. The jury is still out on Berto's chin IMO and though there are many ways you can hide a suspect chin the truth always comes out in the ring so we'll just have to wait and see. All I can say is that where there's smoke, there's usually fire so if Berto is KO'd by a lesser fighter we can't throw our hands up and act like we never saw it coming.
Have to ask Zackman. I don't doubt his oppinions on this sort of thing. Who knows, maybe he's so good at spotting a glass jaw because he has one himself!
You left out a "minor" detail with Berto's corner messing (cutting?) his boxing gloves to give him a good extra minute to recover in case he wasn't all there yet.. That is cheating plain and simple. It was a good shot that he didn't see.
I think were being abit harsh on Bertos chin here. The Rivera KD was a flash KD truly not indicitive Bertos chin quality
www.youtube.com/pqk0qw6fsrq here is the knockdown for the newly named bertos chin thread. i think people are mugging themselves when they belive you can take a uppercut to the chin and still have bodily functions. im not gonna pull the "oh your a keyboard warrior", "you havnt got in the ring" becuase that a red herring. SOOOOOO... i belive berto can get dropped and stopped but it isnt purely glass he took some huge left hooks from estrada who was a definate puncher. so my point is are we judging chins too highly? zakman can say what he wants to say about chins becuase the chance of getting koed is so ****ing high in boxing. i mean the odds of getting knockedown or tkoed in a career is pretty good chance actually it's hige possiblity. because berto has been put into the weak chinned list, if he gets koed that means he is now glass jawed...it's a failed system. dergh!!! **** it tyson ko1
I see this got turned into a Berto thread which wasn't entirely my intention.... as the jury is still out on him. And Cruiser1 i know Tua was still maturing back then so i hold nothing against him but he was hardly "punchy" as a amateur. Also going up in weight as a pro is also not entirely what im talking about... i really wonder if there was a amateur that got dropped several/numerous times that seemed very solid as a Pro. I do expect this to be a very rare thing but there must have been some instance of this!
Most guys go up in weight when entering pro ranks dont they? That should help a little, combined with physically maturing with age. No helmets and smaller gloves would work the other way of course; hard to say in other words :hat
I don't know of any particular boxer's to answer your question as i don't watch much amateur boxing but i think there may be some as punch resistance seems to increase with age so i wouldn't suprissed if some pro fighters who have good chins got dropped a few times in the amateurs when they were younger. Like i said, i don't watch much amaeur boxing, but from the little i have seen they seem to jump in and out more and don't plant there feet as much so they are not as steady and of balance more so i think that could lead to more knock downs compared to the pro ranks were fighter's tend to plant there feet more when throwing punches. With this in mind i wouldn't be suprrised if some solid chinned fighters took a few flash knockdowns in the amateur game. Thats just my opinion from my limited am boxing experience. Hopefully a keener amatuer boxing fan than me can answer your question better as i am interested in this now you have brought it up.
