Ok, I’ll change my original narrative slightly. Kosta seemed happy for his corner to stop the fight that’s maybe how I should have worded it, splitting hairs a little bit but I’ll settle on that. I’m still a little puzzled at all these “facts” you’ve established but there you go. Anyway I know I’m not debating with one of the more moronic posters on here but a good poster who give’s great input so peace be with you brother.
All good Cec, I could lay out the facts again but no need to perpetuate, we live to discuss peacefully another day. I appreciate the kind words and, without being trite, I can genuinely say the same of your own good self. Peace.
He had an above average, but not great, chin. He was dropped too many times to have a great chin. But he had excellent recuperative powers and heart.
He showed great heart sometimes. Went out on his shield against Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis, with the Douglas and Lewis fights being particularly bad one-sided beatings.
I respectfully disagree. Making it through 75 pro fights only being stopped once by Mike Tyson and at the age of 38 with a two year layoff is pretty solid. And throughout his career he took the best that men like Shavers, Cooney, Norton, Witherspoon, Weaver, Berbick, Mercer, McCall and Holyfield had to offer. Getting decked here and there isn’t always an indication of a weak chin. Sometimes it’s the result of getting caught off balance or in Holmes’ case, getting tagged by guys who hit really fcking hard..
Here's an example of a great chin. Right around 1:17. This content is protected Lewis hits Mercer with a perfect uppercut that Mercer didn't see coming. Lewis was a hard hitter and had a great uppercut. That shot right there would have decked most fighters. Holmes only being stopped once was due to his recovery powers and heart paired with his above average chin -- I didn't say he had a weak chin. His was better than average.
Oh I’ve seen that fight and many others demonstrating solid Chins. But I still think Holmes’ was among one of the best. Guess we’ll just agree to disagree on that one.
Roberto Duran Chin = 8/10 Recuperative powers = 9/10 Heart = 7/10 Thomas Hearns Chin = 5/10 Recuperative powers = 6/10 Heart = 10/10 Muhammad Ali Chin = 8/10 Recuperative powers = 9/10 Heart = 10/10 Larry Holmes Chin = 7/10 Recuperative powers = 10/10 Heart = 10/10
Surprised at your low assessment of Duran's heart, George, given how much you admire him. I have said that the heart he showed coming out for the second round, knowing what he was certainly facing, was amazing. I think his chin as demonstrated in the Barkley fight, 37 and fighting 25lbs above his natural weight, was top drawer too. He went the distance with bigger men in Leonard and Hagler, champions who hurt bigger men than him and he didn't buckle. I'd say his recuperative powers looked pretty good and, bizarrely, use the Hearns KO as evidence. That was as good a KO punch as was ever delivered and Duran was conscious and talking not long after his corner picked him up. Compare that other victims of that kind of knockout who are out cold for ages. I give him top marks or near enough in all three categories, myself. I know his heart let him down v Leonard and Lawlor so maybe just an 8 there.
As I read the thread title, Tommy was the one that 1st came to mind for me as well. Great shout, John!!!
