Larry Holmes comes to mind right away. Down hard against Shavers and Snipes, he recovered quick and was even fighting back. Never panicked nor lost control of the situation.
How would rate the following heavyweight boxers in the 3 categories using ‘poor’, ‘average’, ‘good’ and ‘great’ as the ratings: Frank Bruno: Chin = ? Recuperative powers = ? Heart = ? Joe Frazier: Chin = ? Recuperative powers = ? Heart = ? Mike Tyson: Chin = ? Recuperative powers = ? Heart = ?
Frank Bruno: Chin = Average Recuperative powers = Poor Heart = Average Joe Frazier: Chin = Good Recuperative powers = Good Heart = Great Mike Tyson: Chin = Good/Great (force me to chose 1 & I'd go with good) Recuperative powers = Average Heart = Average
Yep, I basically agree with all of those. Frazier’s heart is a 10/10 - I don’t think anyone ever showed greater heart than him. He also showed he could recover from knockdowns. He had a decent chin but ran into one of the five best punchers in heavyweight history twice. Bruno’s chin could have been above average but his reaction was to stand still once hurt and ship punishment. He was like a deer in headlights once he was hurt. He never once showed any real ability to rebound from being hurt. His heart was decent enough (against Tyson in the first fight and against Lewis) except for the Tyson rematch where he was clearly scared shitless. Tyson had a solid chin and took a lot of flush shots against guys like Douglas and Holyfield but he never came back from the brink. The Holyfield rematch was a quit job, really. But he showed a heck of a lot of heart against Lewis when he was taking a slow pounding.
Agreed. I considered grading Bruno's chin as good, as I suspect he wasn't that easy to hurt, but all you had to do to KO him was hurt him (unless your name is Jumbo Cummings & there's only a few seconds left in the round), because he absolutely froze once hurt.
