Hagler had a head made of stone and fought better competition than Margarito has to this point, but he also was much better defensively and didn't have to rely on his chin as much.

On the other hand, Margarito generally hasn't faced the same level of opponent, yet in his career-defining fight he have up his head in order to protect his body.

    What do you think?

Hagler is simply more proven, definitely one of the best chins in the history of the sport. Margarito has an excellent chin as well though. He'd get stopped within a few rounds against Hearns though. Then again Hearns fought Hagler at MW.

I was surprised at the lack of body work done by Cotto, considering Margo's granite chin, I thought he would concentrate more on it.

That was the main reason he lost.

The reason he didn't throw those punches is because Margarito wouldn't let him. Margarito gave up his face in order to protect his body. Smart, but only a truly granite chin could have pulled that off against Cotto over that many rounds.

Margarito is a freak, one of the most jab-immune fighters I've ever seen. He takes them flush but keeps coming. Cotto's jab landed but was ineffective.

Tough to compare. Both chins are/were top notchh. Hagler had better defense as he parried shots well, but he took good shots from heavy hitters like Hart, Hearns, and Mugabi and was never legitimately dropped.

Margarito takes more shots as his defense upstairs is rather shitty, but he keeps coming.

Great fight. This will make Cotto mentally stronger when he comes back. Leaning against the ropes did not help neither. His corner was telling him to stay off the ropes. I feel that he can come back with a strong game plan and execute.

Margarito, as the fight went on, did give me the impression of a "fighter that will not be denied" and after the 7th stanza, I was concerned. It must have been confidence draining on Cotto to see all his flush shots landing on Margos chin and having no effect.

hagler. His granite chin allowed him to go toe to toe with hearns for three brutal rounds. Altough he had a good defense, just threw that out of the window against a killer KO puncher in hearns.

I think you cover things pretty well in this post. Hagler should be giventhe nod at the moment, but Margarito is in that sort of class and may overhaul him because of his more open style if he continues to fight at the top level. He shipped some monster shots there against Cotto mind...

Do you think Hearns would have stopped Margarito using the Hagler fight plan?

By the way, I thought you'd set this up as a fantasy fight, thought you done lost your mind

hagler took bombs against the likes of mugabi, roldan, hearns etc...... and remained standing. i think hagler's chin was the definition of granite. though he also was a top notch boxer in his prime and worked behind a great pumping jab, compared to margarito charging in with his mediocre defense.

margarito's got a beard of concrete too. this guy did'nt even blink taking cintron's and cotto's best shots. not to mention he did'nt cut at all, and did'nt swell horribly considering the amount of flush shots cotto landed

yes thats what surprised me the most, his head didn't even budge nor his eye blink. Cotto as we all know has one of the most deadliest hooks in boxing currently and it was like nothing to margo

Hagler is a hard guy to match for chins...but i would have Margarito very high on a all time chin list still.
