what is the reasoning forkeeping your chin down. unless i am doing something wrong it doesnt seem to do anything. are you supposed to roll your shoulder into your chin?

Keep it tucked into your chest. If you want to know the reason just keep leaving it exposed, and when you shockingly end up on your ass, out cold, you will know the reason.

Bro, seriously keep it down as much as possible. Obviously you need to still be able to see. We all get sloppy on occasion and leave it up. Just make sure you tuck it when you are in range, or backing out of range.

You keep your chin down so it is not an easy target for your opponent. It's a hotspot for knockouts, so keeping it down helps in preventing them.

Also, The most important part is that you are putting it down, and not out and down. Your chin should not be touching your chest, unless you have one big ass chin. Furthermore, if you are uncomfortable or you cannot see your opponent, you have your chin down much too far. Find a position that it is not perpendicular with you neck, but also make sure that it is comfortable for you and you can see your opponent clearly without straining.

If you need some more help, try asking your trainer the correct position. If you are afraid to do so due to fear of ridicule, find another trainer. If you don't have a trainer, watch some pro matches. Hopkins does a good job of keeping his chin in order, if my memory serves me right.

Please show me a picture or some example of a boxer with his chin tucked into his chest... That seriously has to be a huge chin.

When I have my chin tucked, there is still about 1 or 1 and a half inches of space between the edges of my collar bone and my chin.

Well, that all depends on your defense method. In the standard defense, no, you simply have your chin down a bit. Your shoulder is not involved.

There are, of course, defense styles that do involve the shoulder, and specifically, putting the chin behind the shoulder. However, for a beginner such as yourself, I wouldn't worry about complicated styles just yet. Refer to my other post for a pretty deep explanation on where it should be positioned.

Sometimes I use a tennis ball as a training aid and shadow box with it tucked under the chin so that you get use to keeping your chin tucked in.
